WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (PTI) — Jews and Sikhs are the two most targeted religious groups in hate-motivated crimes in the United States in 2021, according to the FBI’s annual compilation of incidents across the country.

A total of 1,005 religion-related hate crimes were reported in 2021, the FBI said.

Overall, law enforcement agencies reported 7,262 incidents and 9,024 victims, the FBI said, suggesting hate crimes remain a concern in communities across the country.

It said the total number of reporting institutions fell to 11,834 from 15,138 in 2021, making it impossible to reliably compare data across years.

According to FBI 2021 data, 64.8% of victims were targeted because of criminal bias based on race/ethnicity/ancestry, which remains the largest bias motivation category.

Anti-Black or African-American hate crimes remain the largest category of bias incidents, accounting for 63.2% of all single-bias incidents in 2021. Additionally, anti-Asian incidents accounted for 4.3 percent of reported incidents in 2021.

The other largest categories of hate crimes included anti-Hispanic or Latino incidents, which accounted for 6.1 percent of incidents, and anti-white incidents, which accounted for 13.4 percent of incidents.
