His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, attended to oversee preparations for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) The Higher Council meeting of the 2023 Dubai Expo City will be held from 30 November to 12 December 2023. The meeting discussed the latest developments in climate conference preparations and community engagement.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President-elect and Vice-Chairman of the High Committee, provided Sheikh Hamdan with an update on the COP28 President’s global listening tour, which was held at the Climate Conference. During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the importance of local and federal government entities working together as a team to ensure the success of COP28.
Sheikh Hamdan said that the UAE looks forward to hosting dialogues at COP28 on environmental issues that will have a lasting impact on global sustainable development and the future of humanity. He said the organization of the event reflected the UAE’s commitment to bringing together countries and institutions from around the world to develop solutions to key international issues. He added that in line with the UAE’s success in hosting major global events, COP28 pledged to forge new avenues to address global environmental and climate-related challenges.
The meeting builds on discussions at the previous High Council meeting, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of the UAE High Council at COP28 .
Dr Al Jaber said, “The COP28 Chair actively consulted and listened to all stakeholders on the first leg of our listening journey to unite efforts of all stakeholders to develop concrete solutions spanning mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage solutions, and climate finance. This is critical to COP28’s vision of building an open, transparent and inclusive process that builds on previous climate progress, strengthens support among diverse stakeholders, and advances breakthrough outcomes , solutions and partnerships to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.”
Dr Al Jaber emphasized that bringing together global, regional and national efforts to drive meaningful climate action and ensure that all segments of society, from business and NGOs to youth, women and civil society, play a constructive role in The key to the success of COP28 is before and during the climate summit.
During the meeting, Shamma bin Suhail Faris Al Mazrui, Minister of Community Development and COP28 Youth Climate Advocate, highlighted efforts to accelerate local and international youth engagement and prioritize youth voices, needs and skills in the global climate agenda.
Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, affirmed the UAE’s commitment to bold national climate action, in line with COP28’s vision for transformative progress and the UAE’s theme for 2023, the Year of Sustainable Development.
The meeting also discussed in depth all the logistical preparations that will create a seamless experience for delegates and visitors, from maximizing accessibility to creating opportunities for all groups to participate in discussions and events.
The COP28 UAE High Council is made up of ministers and government officials who represent the collective efforts of all levels of government, industries and sectors in preparation for the COP28 UAE Climate Summit.
The members of the high committee include Mohammed Hadi Al-Husseini, Minister of State for Finance; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment ; Dr AS Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade; Shamma bin Suhail Faris Al Mazrui, Minister of Community Development; Muhammad Abdullah Al Junaibi, Chairman of the Federal Agreements and Strategic Narrative Authority; Lieutenant General Mali.
Members also include Lieutenant General Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Farasi, Director General of National Security at Dubai Police; Major General Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police; Mohammed Al Tayer, Rashid Saeed Al Ameri, Deputy Minister of the Government Coordination Department of the Presidential Court; Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Deputy Minister of the Interior; Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and representatives of the Supreme Court.
