UK police find remains in search for Constance Martin’s missing baby

March 2 (United Press International) — Officials searching for Constance Martin’s missing baby and Mark Gordon Authorities said they had found the remains of a baby in a wooded area in southern England near where the couple were arrested earlier this week.

The remains were found Wednesday afternoon when hundreds of officers and K-9 units, assisted by helicopters, drones and thermal imaging cameras, searched a 90-square-mile area near Brighton on the English south coast of the English Channel.

Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said a statement An autopsy will be carried out soon and the location where the remains were found has been designated as a crime scene and is expected to remain so for some time.

“This is something that I and many of the officials involved in the search hoped would not happen,” Basford said. “I recognize that this news will have an impact on many who have been following this story closely, and can assure them that we will do everything in our power to determine what happened.”

Police found the remains of Martin, 35, and Gordon, 48, the daughters of aristocrat and film and music producer Napier Martin, arrested They were found without their newborn by a member of the public at a shop in Stanmer Villas about 9.30pm on Monday.

The couple were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect but have since been further charged with gross negligent homicide.

Police have been looking for the trio since the beginning of this year A car was seen ablaze on the shoulder of the M61 motorway in Bolton, about 270 miles north-west of Brighton, north of Manchester, on the afternoon of January 5.

An investigation revealed that Gordon and Martin were passengers in the vehicle, which they abandoned a day or two after Martin was believed to have given birth in or near the vehicle, and that neither she nor the baby received medical attention.

A missing persons investigation has been launched after police repeatedly appealed to the couple to contact authorities to ensure their and their child’s welfare. A $12,000 reward is being offered to the public for information leading to their whereabouts.

Police said the trio left their car and headed to Liverpool, then Harwich and then London on January 7, where they were seen getting out of a taxi with an orange handbag and a pram .

That night, Gordon bought two large bags of items from a store, including a tent, two sleeping bags and pillows, leading police to worry they were planning to camp outside in winter weather.

They were last seen early on Jan. 8, taking shelter from the rain under a bridge in New Haven before heading out into the field with some bags and their blue tent.
