A smart teenager who won the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes in Leopardstown, the Quality Road pony was eliminated 30-100 in the Listed Patton Stakes over 1 mile favorite task – it’s part of a race The European Road to the Kentucky Derby”.
Keeping pace with News At Ten for most of the journey, the market leader took the lead on the straight and eventually scored with an easy two lengths.
O’Brien and Moore won the Patton Stakes with Mendelssohn in 2018 – and Cairo could follow in his footsteps, taking part in the Emirates derby and possibly heading to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.
Stable representative Chris Armstrong said: “It’s been a good start for him. Aidan feels coming here he’s ready to start. He’s going to play a lot of games.
“Ryan was happy with him and he said he’d come a lot too, experience and fitness-wise. Ryan couldn’t get cover, he probably did a little bit early on against the other guys who were playing. He gave Ryan a good Feel.
“The plan is, everything is fine and if he comes out of this well, he’s going to Dubai for the Emirates derby, we’ll see.
“He’s an exciting horse, hope he has a good season.”
Armstrong added: “He’s come fast enough, Aidan feels fit, he’s just ready to start. It’s worth a try on the dirt in Dubai. If it goes well there, we’ll probably have a look at Kentucky (Derby). He has a triple crown King’s eligibility.
“It’s good to have the first group of entries here and to look overseas.
“Ryan feels he’s been hit hard and he’s going to work on it.
“He’s a Quality Road son, very good pedigree. Very fast in the pedigree and a very good mover. A sporty horse with a lovely attitude and he’s exciting. He will step up on the trip to Dubai .
“Many options.”
