World News | Farmers in Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan get good prices for ginger

Sanjujunka [Bhutan], March 5 (ANI): With the Covid-19 restrictions truly lifted, farmers in Samdrup Jongkhar have been able to fetch good prices for their ginger. According to Bhutan Live, Indian traders are now allowed to enter Samdrup Jongkhar to buy ginger, helping farmers get at least 30 Nunu per kg of ginger.

Although the government has taken back their ginger through a buyback scheme, farmers have been limited to a maximum of Nur 30 per kg for the past three years due to COVID restrictions.

But now Indian traders are back and the price of Bhutanese ginger has reached 35 Nu per kg, much to the delight of the farmers.

Tshewang Tenzin, a ginger grower in Pemathang Gewog, said that during the pandemic, some villagers were selling ginger for 7 to 8 yuan per kilogram.

“Now with the removal of Covid-19 restrictions, we are getting between 32 and 35 ngultrum per kilo of ginger,” he added.

“Now Indian businessmen come here to buy our ginger. Last time, we got Nu 32 to Nu 35. Now Indian businessmen come to us and agree to exchange Nu 36 for a kilogram of ginger,” said Phurpa Wangdi, a ginger farmer in Martshala Gewog.

“The price this year is better compared to last year. Last year, I got Nu 25 per kg, but this year I get Nu 30 per kg. So, Nu gyen Dorji said, there is a difference of 7 to 8.”, from Martshala Gewog Another farmer.
