SEOUL, March 6 (AP) – South Korea says it will raise local private funds to compensate South Koreans who won damages in lawsuits against Japanese companies that enslaved them during World War II.

Seoul’s statement reflects conservative President Yoon Hek-yeol’s determination to repair strained relations with Japan and cement trilateral Seoul-Tokyo-Washington security cooperation to better counter North Korea’s nuclear threat.

But the announcement is expected to draw a backlash from former forced laborers and their supporters, who are demanding direct compensation from Japanese companies.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park In said at a televised news conference on Monday that the victims would be compensated through a local foundation funded by private donations. (Associated Press)
