The Edge: U2 will miss Mullen, but Vegas will be ‘great’

[ad_1]

hardcore U2 fans will be disappointed Larry Mullen Jr. The band’s series will not be broadcast on The MSG Sphere.

One of those fans happened to be the band’s founding member and guitarist.

“Nobody is more disappointed than us that Larry won’t be joining us in Las Vegas,” The Edge said in a report published over the weekend. The guitars are great, “We made a commitment. You can count on the fingers of one hand the shows we’ve missed in U2 history.”

The Edge says the three people who will miss Mullen the most will be Bono, bassist Adam Clayton and himself.

“After all these years, it would be strange to turn around and not see him behind us,” Edge said in an interview published by Britain’s Telegraph magazine. “But the show will be great.”

Mullen, 61, is resting as he undergoes surgery to repair wear and tear on his body.

Instead of Mullen is bram van den Bergdutch alternative rock pop group crepe.

“We’re lucky to have him. He’s a formidable force,” Edge told the publication.

“U2: UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere” Will open with new venue in September. Dates are expected to be Sept. 29-30, but the shows have yet to be officially confirmed and depend on how construction progresses at the $2.2 billion facility. The announcement for the series was that it would open in the fall (the band refers to “Achtung Baby” as a “venue release” rather than a series).

The Edge interview also revealed an extended timeline for the U2 series. These dates were planned before the pandemic and were originally scheduled for 2021 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of “Achtung Baby” and the original opening of The Sphere. The pandemic forced the postponement. Another Vegas timeout never came.

U2 has been particularly prolific over the past few months.

On March 17, the band released “Songs of Surrender,” a collection of raw, reimagined variations of their greatest cuts. Also on the same day, the Disney+ documentary “Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman,” will be released (world premiere Wednesday at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles).

Bono will perform eight performances of his critically acclaimed book, A Tale of Surrender, beginning April 16 at the Beacon Theater on Broadway.

The multiple ways U2 communicated its message made splitting off to pursue careers alone unlikely.

“So every time I think about quitting, I reinvent U2. We both know that being closer to each other makes us shine even more,” says The Edge. “That’s why it’s so hard to break up U2 — simply because it works so well for all of us.”

I had a great conversation with the great Kelly Hansen on Monday morning. Working in a column on powerful singers, he added years to Alien’s live performances. The band will return to the Venetian Theater for eight shows from March 24 to April 8.

These are the last scheduled dates for foreigners in Las Vegas. But this year we won’t be saying goodbye. The band will end its touring era with a “farewell” tour, which runs from April to September of this year and runs until 2024.

“The idea is to try to go all the places we’ve never been, although I don’t think we’ll be able to quite do that,” Hansen said. “I think we owe the fans, never give them less than what they deserve.” The band has a 24-year gig vacancy. “I think it’s safe to say this time or next time will be the last time we play Vegas.”
