DUBAI: Held at Burj Khalifa Park next to the gleaming Burj Khalifa, Dubai’s first Modest Fashion Week was a blast. Over two days on December 8th and 9th, the humble fashion designer, influencer and enthusiast participated in more than 40 fashion shows, 50 pop-up stores, and more than 100 people from 20 countries. Influencers talk and fashion and art exhibitions. Catwalk alone showcased over 300 understated looks led by leaders in the understated fashion industry, including Modanisa’s Selma Sari, Canadian understated teen label Yours Truly, understated Huw Roman Tokyo and US-based Flulumae, as well as modern ready-to-wear Malaysian label aere, followed by Kuwaiti brand Anotah.
Rustic style is no different in essence and core from mainstream style, and as it becomes more mainstream, influencers and designers are creating a style of fashionistas, modest millennials and mainstream style lovers acceptable style. Rana Al-Sayyed, founder of faith-conscious brand RANAZONE, said on Modest Fashion Week’s Style Talk panel, “Understated fashion is new to the world, so we always need to bring something new , because style is an art that each of us from our own culture, language and place can use to express who we are.”
Dubai aims to become the epicenter of the multi-billion dollar Middle Eastern retail industry and the two-day event was officially opened by Sheikha Azza bint Rashid Al-Nuaimi, Mouza Obaid Ghubash, Diana Haddad and founders Franka Soeria and Özlem Şahin Think Arif Ebrahim, Founder of Fashion and Red Connect.
Social media bloggers and influencers flocked to the event, as the influence these platforms have on fashion and beauty cannot be denied. As Manal Chinutay, a beauty blogger known for her makeup and hijab tutorials, explained in her talk on fashion, “Social media has inspired me to change up my style and there are so many different ways to dress well, so it It’s important not to get discouraged,” if you’re defining your own style of humility.
As the runway lights up and plain style takes center stage, the future of plain fashion is bright, beautiful and meticulous. Kicking off with premium leather brand Doris Dorothea, influencers and humble icons took to the runway to showcase their style with this premium exotic leather strap. Next up is Studio Teh, an emerging line of understated womenswear where models bring life to multi-dimensional designs, sporting movement through layers, lace and tulle.
Shows continued well into the night, with the event finally wrapping up just after 11pm, marking the end of the festivities and the unveiling in austere style. Though considered a success, Chinutay noted on her personal Instagram that future low-key fashion week events could focus on increasing diversity to represent the full medley of the low-key community. “I was the only black woman who flew out to attend…it seems normal that no black or darker Muslims are invited to these events. This is not and does need to change…because we are meant to represent one ummah/community. “
Dubai Modest Fashion Week looks ahead to next year with a focus on continued growth and development. As Arif Ebrahim, founder of organizing partner Red Connect, explains, “After the success of the first DMFW, we can’t wait to host Modest Fashion Week in Dubai and make it bigger and better next year.
