Emirati fashionista Fatma Al Mulla has not only been dubbed a “designer like no other” – her eponymous label is full of vibrant prints and cultural references – but she has also been chosen to design a limited edition Sunglass Hut to celebrate National Day Celebrate with Shine Day x FMM Cases.
Here, she tells us about the project, how she felt about the special occasion and how she was inspired by her son.

What does National Day mean to you as an Emiratis? how do you celebrate
The UAE has come this far and each year I am in awe of the new challenges my country sets and accomplishes. It makes me incredibly proud to be an Emiratis and to celebrate what a privilege it is every year.
I spend the day with my friends and family. Elders in my family always miss the first National Day; the feeling of seeing the UAE flag raised for the first time.

Can you tell us about your National Day collaboration with Sunglass Hut?
The design of the Sunglass Hut x FMM Special Edition Sunglasses Case reflects my love for my hometown UAE – a country that has inspired me a lot behind my brand; FMM Dubai. They are really my anthem to the country on National Day.
For the designs, I drew recognizable, relevant elements from my culture and portrayed Emirati traditions. So not only are these cases a great accessory to your sunglasses, but they’ll also look great in your Instagram flat lay photos!

How did you get into design? Is everything going well? Do you think living in the UAE will make it easier for people to pursue their dreams?
From a very young age, I have always loved art and drawing. I pursued art in school and college and found my style naturally. I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth journey, it comes with challenges, but I’m grateful that I get to do what I love every day. I don’t think the UAE will make things easier as I’m sure most countries do; I’ve been challenged in unexpected ways so it really depends on the effort and time you put into making your dreams come true.

Can you describe your style and how your designs offer UAE clients something that others may not?
I love color and I love incorporating color and pattern into my everyday life. I think I reflect this through my FMM design.

What do you think of the overall fashion scene in the UAE?is there anything you want to change?
Very hot, very creative. With social media playing such a big role in our lives, we get glimpses of inspirational “ootd” every day! I think the UAE is very experimental when it comes to fashion. Local Emirati girls can be very stylish and it really takes creativity and an eye for styling to transform a piece of clothing that is rooted in tradition and heritage into something statement!
If I could change one thing, I would change the segregation of the fashion industry here. It seems like people are grouped together based on their heritage, culture and even their style. It would be huge if all these groups came together and brought fashion elements from their “worlds”!

Who is your fashion icon? Is there anyone in the industry that you would like to work with?
Iris Apfel is my ultimate idol! She is so unique and true to herself. She has an eye for style. Such efforts create an incredible style, but she makes it look effortless. I think she switched accessories; she broke the rules and created what is now.
I love Kenzo and Tsumori Chisatu, I love brands that are bold and fun, have subtle details that a lot of people don’t notice, brands that aren’t afraid to take risks.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
My son really inspires me, seeing the world through his eyes, the way he explores new environments and experiences.
I’m also very inspired by the people around me, the ones who have a lot of energy – I try to surround myself with these people because they really elevate my perspective and spark my creativity.
Social media inspires me, and many parts of my brand are based on pop culture, which is heavily influenced by social media and market trends. It also fueled my love for photography; the amount of inspiring content now at my fingertips is so amazing!
Fatma’s Top Fashion Tips
。 Believe in yourself and be confident in what you want to wear.
. Don’t follow trends blindly; follow what suits your personality and works for you.
。 INVEST IN THE RIGHT PART; the right bag, jewelry or the perfect coat will last you forever.
