League of Arab States supports UAE’s bid to host global climate summit COP 28-news

[ad_1]

The UAE’s bid focuses on the economic case for climate action and emphasizes the country’s long-term commitment to investing in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies

The League of Arab States (LAS) announced on Thursday that it will support the UAE’s proposal to host the COP 28 International Conference on Climate Change in Abu Dhabi in 2023.

This move was made after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) received similar approval on May 24.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the decision-making body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The UAE’s bid-submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat in May last year-focused on the economic case for climate action and emphasized the country’s long-term commitment to invest in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies domestically and worldwide.

Fifteen years ago, the UAE placed climate action at the center of its economic growth and diversification strategy.

Today, it operates three of the largest and lowest cost solar power plants in the world. It is the first country in the Middle East to operate zero-carbon nuclear power, and the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to adopt carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies to achieve decarbonization of heavy industries.

To date, the UAE has invested approximately US$16.8 billion in renewable energy companies in 70 countries/regions.

As the host country of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the UAE has always advocated public-private partnerships to promote climate action, and held preparatory meetings for the last UN Climate Summit in 2014 and 2019.

In April, the UAE and the United States jointly launched the AIM Climate Initiative to increase and accelerate innovation in global agriculture and food systems to promote climate action.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, said: “Climate change is a problem of our time. Given that the Arab region is likely to be one of the most severely affected regions in the world, we Hopefully, with the support of all of us, the UAE will win the nomination for the host country of the 28th Conference of the Parties in 2023. We look forward to this and the Egyptian chairmanship of COP 27 next year.”

The LAS decision was made at the ministerial meeting of the Economic and Social Council in Cairo on Thursday.
