39% of knowledge workers will be ‘hybrid working’ by the end of 2023

[ad_1]

According to technology research and consulting firm Gartner, 39% of the world’s knowledge workers will be working in hybrid jobs by the end of 2023, up from 37% in 2022.

“Hybrid is no longer just an employee benefit, it’s an employee expectation,” said Ranjit Atwal, senior principal analyst at Gartner. “Many employees will begin to partially return to the office in 2022, but hybrid work will remain dominant in 2023 and beyond . To adapt, employers have been implementing human-centered job design — including flexibility, conscious collaboration, and empathy-based management — that suits the hybrid workforce.”

For example, IT employees are more likely than employees in other functions to leave their jobs because they seek greater flexibility, better work-life balance, and better career opportunities. CIOs can maximize retention and attraction by resetting the employee value proposition with a more human touch.

mixed worker

Gartner defines a hybrid workforce as one who works in the office at least one day a week. Fully remote workers are those who have been working from home. On-site workers are those who work on-site full-time, rather than from home at all times.

The number of remote workers is expected to continue to decline year over year. Gartner estimates that by the end of 2023, remote workers will account for just 9 percent of all employees worldwide.

In the US, the hybrid work trend will be more pronounced than in other parts of the world, with 51% of knowledge workers expected to work hybridly and 20% to work entirely remotely by 2023.

Human-centered design requires a new set of principles, norms, and thinking. A successful virtual workspace will improve the ability to hire and assemble employees regardless of their geographic location. Virtual workspaces offer new and potentially disruptive alternatives to face-to-face meetings (and associated travel) and existing virtual meeting solutions. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 10% of employees will use virtual spaces for activities such as sales, onboarding and remote work.

Fully fledged virtual workspace

“For remote-first or hybrid organizations, fully fledged virtual workspaces have the potential to replace the office as the expression of company culture and become the center of the digital employee experience,” said Christopher Trueman, senior principal analyst at Gartner. “However, employees should not be expected to engage with virtual workspaces throughout the workday. Virtual workspaces should only be used for meetings and interactions that are enhanced by them, such as brainstorming, product reviews or social gatherings.”

While all countries have increased their share of hybrid and fully remote work since 2019, the attractiveness of fully remote and hybrid work varies by country.

Employers in Japan are more focused on employees returning to the office full-time than other employers globally. In Japan, fully remote and hybrid knowledge workers will account for 29% of its workforce by 2023.

Europe follows

In Europe, face-to-face interaction is still preferred, with hybrid working styles expected to increase in 2023. In Germany, fully remote and hybrid knowledge workers will account for 49% of the German workforce by 2023. Given their cultural and vertical mix, the number of fully remote and hybrid knowledge workers in the UK will rise over the same period.

By 2023, the number of full, remote, and hybrid knowledge workers in the US will account for 71 percent of the US workforce. In the UK, fully remote and hybrid knowledge workers will make up 67% of its workforce by 2023. — trade arab news agency
