ABU DHABI – The Abu Dhabi Competitiveness Office (COAD) of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) has announced the expansion of its ‘Patent Support Services’ to foster innovation and boost Abu Dhabi’s knowledge economy.
The move is part of the Innovate Abu Dhabi initiative, launched in 2022, to support innovators and entrepreneurs in transforming their ideas into products and services, thereby fostering a diverse, smart and sustainable economy.
Under the updated terms of the patent support service, micro, small and medium-sized companies, academic institutions and Abu Dhabi licensed companies will be included in the scheme to encourage innovation, support the emirate’s diversification strategy and create jobs locally. areas of knowledge and innovation. Financial support for all supported businesses will increase by 27% to 30%, helping inventors at critical invention stages.
In addition, patent support services will be expanded to include applications from the UAE and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entities.
Applications for patent application support services increased by 86% in 2022, with 91 applications filed, compared to 49 in 2021. The number of patent applications supported increases from 3 in 2021 to 30 in 2022.
Additionally, the Takamul program aims to support inventors and promote a culture of innovation in the UAE, as well as provide patent support services internationally.
Hala Al Ameri, Executive Director of COAD, said the organization is committed to supporting inventors and strengthening the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem by expanding the range of patent support services.
Since the launch of Innovate Abu Dhabi, COAD has implemented several initiatives and programs focusing on talent and knowledge, funding, space and place, needs, culture and incentives, recognizing their critical role in enriching the innovation environment.
In response to continuous communication with inventors and innovators as well as market research, COAD takes the necessary steps to provide an environment conducive to innovation. COAD has also launched the Young Inventors Program in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Youth Council to support young talents, invest in their potential, develop innovations and disseminate knowledge about ADDED’s IP services, thereby increasing the number of patents filed.
COAD launched the Abu Dhabi Innovation Incubator Programme, which develops policies and regulations to support innovation incubators investing in high-tech solutions and R&D.
These incubators will help innovators at various stages of development and provide a conducive environment for turning ideas or scientific inventions into business opportunities.
Innovation incubators play a vital role in creating an inspiring environment that supports and nurtures the development of innovative ideas and their eventual commercial success.
Additionally, COAD has partnered with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Consolidation Council (QCC) to launch the Abu Dhabi Technology Readiness Guide (TRL). The guidelines are designed to provide a consistent measure of technology readiness and maturity levels, based on a comprehensive study of best international standards.
