In the first incident, a man was seen crossing the road at a roundabout. He managed to cross the first two lanes safely, but was hit by a gray sedan as he crossed the leftmost lane.
In the second incident, two men can be seen crossing city roads at speeds of up to 80km/h. The man again managed to cross the first three lanes as multiple cars slowed to avoid hitting them. In the leftmost highway lane, a pickup truck ended up crashing into pedestrians.
Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Department warned in a statement that jaywalking is the main cause of rollover accidents in the emirate. Therefore, pedestrians caught jaywalking will be fined Dh400.
It urged residents to only cross at zebra crossings, or use pedestrian tunnels and viaducts. Even at designated intersections, pedestrians must obey pedestrian signals to ensure their own safety, police said.
Police have been working hard to raise awareness of the dangers of jaywalking, including a coordinated campaign launched last week.
Abu Dhabi’s traffic and municipal authorities have also introduced a series of measures to reduce jaywalking, including blocking gaps in the middle of the road fence and installing artificial intelligence radar to detect motorists who fail to give way to pedestrians at designated intersections.
