UAE’s etisalat by e& says it has partnered with Microsoft to successfully deploy the software giant’s private multi-access edge computing (MEC), becoming one of the first operators in the MENA region.
The solution enables manufacturing, energy, critical infrastructure and retail industries to deploy modern connected applications to meet their operational needs.
The Azure Private MEC deployment enables etisalat by e& to provide reliable, high-performance, low-latency private 4G and 5G connectivity to applications using robotics, video analytics and IoT at the edge, helping enable the next wave of digital transformation.
With Azure Private MEC, etisalat, an e-commerce and enterprise customer, can easily deploy a complete set of 5G core network functions and various applications on small edge computing platforms in tens to hundreds of locations within minutes.
Radio Access Network (RAN) deployment and SIM provisioning is provided and managed by etisalat over the existing network infrastructure. Applications serving business needs can run on the Azure private MEC platform at the edge to provide a reliable, scalable, and secure solution to meet our customer needs.
It added that over time, it plans to launch many new ecosystem application partners to serve various industries such as retail, infrastructure, manufacturing, etc.
According to e&etisalat, the successful collaboration is part of a 5G and private network commercialization plan that will enable it to leverage the Azure platform and ecosystem of application independent software vendors (ISVs) to address business challenges such as manufacturing , production quality checks in stores, management of retail sites or asset tracking at key transportation hubs.
It said this partnership and deployment is in line with the UAE leadership’s Vision 2030 of an open, efficient, effective and globally integrated business environment that creates opportunities for many different verticals to build knowledge-based, sustainable and innovative companies.
Khaled Al Suwaidi, Senior Vice President, Core Networks and Platforms, said: “Providing services and solutions that generate more value than connectivity will be an important driver for operators in the private network market.”
“Building ecosystems is key to realizing the promise of 5G across different verticals. Our partnership with Microsoft earlier this year and our investments in 5G-related technologies support our vision to enable and enhance our enterprise digital ecosystem,” he said.
Shriaj Gaglani, Vice President of Product Management at Microsoft, said: “etisalat by e& is a strategic partner supporting enterprises in the Middle East and North Africa region in their Industry 4.0 transformation.”
“They want a flexible edge computing architecture with a range of networking options and a modern connected application ecosystem, which encourages customers to design and deliver innovative solutions to real business problems,” he added.trade arab news agency
