New UN envoy says Houthi offensive in Yemen “must stop”-News

[ad_1]

The offensive launched by the Houthi rebels in Malibu province in northern Yemen “must stop,” the UN Security Council was informed on Friday that the organization’s new envoy for the country, Hans Grundberg from Sweden, told the UN Security Council.

The newly appointed official said: “Civilians, including many internally displaced persons seeking asylum in Malibu, have been living in fear of violence and re-displacement.”

“The United Nations and the international community have sent a clear message: the offensive must stop.”

The envoy said that since the beginning of 2020, the offensive in the Malibu area has been ongoing and “killed thousands of young Yemenis.”

“The fighting must stop and the violence must end,” he insisted.

Malibu Province is the last bastion of war-torn government power in the north of the country, where violent conflicts often occur.

“The peace process has stalled for too long. The parties to the conflict have not discussed a comprehensive solution since 2016,” Grundberg said.

He said that he will soon go to Saudi Arabia to meet with Yemeni President Abdullabo Mansour Hadi and plan to meet with the Houthis.

He said he also plans to hold talks with officials from Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Iran and Egypt.

According to NGOs, the conflict in Yemen was triggered by a rebel attack in 2014 and has killed tens of thousands of people and left millions on the brink of starvation.
