Calcutta [India]March 15 (ANI): India and Bangladesh’s first cross-border oil pipeline is a true manifestation of the beautiful friendship shared by the two countries, Deputy High Commissioner for India and Bangladesh Andalib Elias said on Tuesday.

“This is a true testament to the beautiful friendship between our two countries and the deep relationship of trust and mutual respect between our prime ministers,” Elias said.

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will jointly inaugurate the first cross-border oil pipeline for the delivery of diesel to Bangladesh on March 18 , This statement is expressed at Sambad Santha (BSS), Bangladesh.

The Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh confirmed the news, saying: “Prime Minister Modi and my Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina first launched the pipeline a few years ago. “The two prime ministers will inaugurate the pipeline (via video conference) on March 18,” he added.

The announcement comes a week after Momen held talks with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi last week on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, BSS reported.

According to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), Indian officials will export the diesel through the 130-km India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline (IBFPL), which will cost around INR 3.46 billion and draw from the Indian Line of Credit (LoC).

The pipeline stretches 125 kilometers in Bangladesh and 5 kilometers in India, while the two prime ministers attended the groundbreaking ceremony of IBFPL via video conference in September 2018.

Bangladesh used to import diesel from India via rail cars.

The foreign minister said he also urged New Delhi to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential items to Bangladesh, BSS reported.

Momen said India has shown high respect to the Bangladeshi delegation throughout the G20 foreign ministers meeting, which reflected the sound development of the Dhaka-Delhi bilateral relationship. (Arnie)
