Regional meeting of WMO Regional Association II (Asia) concludes in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, March 16, 2023–(Business Wire) – The WMO Regional Association II (Asia) Regional Conference (RECO), hosted by the National Centers of Meteorology (NCM), concluded today in Abu Dhabi with a high-level statement in support of the UN initiative ‘Early Warning’.

The statement highlights the urgent need to build national and community response capacity by supporting the development of national policies and legislation to ensure early warning is mainstreamed, develop and advance impact-based early warning and decision support systems for key disaster risk reduction stakeholders .

The statement highlighted the need to build effective and authoritative early warning capabilities in an appropriate format (such as the Common Alert Protocol (CAP)) for all key users, including the media, and to close observation gaps to meet global, regional and national needs. is crucial for forecasting on all time scales.

RECO participants also reaffirmed their support for the further development and implementation of the WMO Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Initiative as an important tool to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement and develop strategies to achieve net zero anthropogenic emissions.

The statement also urges UN system agencies, funds and programmes, intergovernmental organizations, regional organizations, government agencies, development partners, NGOs, the private sector and academia to continue to work with WMO and its Member States to achieve early warning for all.

From 13 to 16 March 2023, RECO provides a forum for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in RA II to address emerging issues and challenges, strengthen regional cooperation and strengthen partnerships to implement WMO resolutions and decisions.

The meeting attracted more than 150 participants, including ambassadors from RA II’s 35 Asian Member States, principal officials of WMO and other UN committees and offices, and permanent representatives of WMO Asian Members.

The meeting discussed a range of weather-related topics, focusing on three components: early warning for all, infrastructure and integrated services.
