Two soldiers were killed in an attack on the Turkish army in Syria | Daily Headlines Syria News

Three other soldiers were injured in an attack on Turkish troops in Idlib province.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, the attack on the Turkish army in Idlib province in northwestern Syria killed two soldiers and injured three.

The ministry said in a statement that Saturday’s attack occurred after a search and screening operation in the degraded area of Idlib. It determined that the dead soldier was an infantry non-commissioned officer.

Idlib was the last major rebel stronghold in the Syrian civil war, and parts of it were patrolled by Turkish and Russian troops.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), headquartered in the United Kingdom, said a roadside bomb attack occurred on the road between Idlib and Binish in a Turkish convoy. It said the wounded soldiers were evacuated to Turkey by helicopter.

SOHR stated that the attack was claimed by an organization called Abu Bakr al-Siddiq supporters, which claimed to have previously launched attacks on the Turkish army.

Akar on the border

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar later went to the Syrian border to meet with military commanders.

Since Turkey and Russia initiated a ceasefire in March 2020, sporadic military activities have taken place in northwestern Syria to support opposing parties in the Syrian civil war. The deal ended the Russian-backed government’s overwhelming offensive in Idlib.

The Syrian government agreed to the ceasefire negotiated between Russia and Turkey, and promised to restore control of its territories lost in the 10-year conflict.

There are approximately 4 million people living in northwestern Syria. Many of them have been displaced by the civil war, which killed half a million people. Half of the country’s 23 million pre-war population has been displaced, including more than 5 million refugees abroad.

In February last year, at least 33 Turkish soldiers were killed in an air strike in Idlib, leading to large-scale retaliation by Turkey against pro-government forces.
