Japan’s vaccine minister leads the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership campaign for opinion polls Japan News

Opinion polls by Nikkei and TV TOKYO show that Taro Kono leads the poll on who should succeed Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Japan’s minister in charge of vaccines, Taro Kono, led a poll on who should succeed Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party leader.

Kono received 27% support in the Nikkei News and TV TOKYO polls, which asked who would be the “right person” to lead the party and become the next prime minister.

The results of the poll from September 9 to 11 were announced on Saturday.

Former Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba followed closely behind with 17%, and former policy chief Fumio Kishida ranked third with 14%. Former Minister of the Interior Sanae Takashi ranked fifth with 7%.

Kono, who also serves as the Minister of Administrative Reform, announced his candidacy on Friday. This is the third candidate to formally announce his intention after Kishida and Gao Yi.

Shiji News Agency quoted a source close to him on Saturday as saying that Shichang might not run for the party leader, but might support another candidate.

Yoshihide Suga unexpectedly stated on September 3 that he will step down, marking the end of a one-year term that was damaged by public support and dissatisfaction with his coronavirus response.

This laid the foundation for a leadership vote between members of the grassroots Liberal Democratic Party and legislators on September 29. Since the Liberal Democratic Party has a majority in the lower house of parliament, the winner can almost become the prime minister.

Kyodo News quoted the ruling party’s legislators as saying that after the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership voted, Japan may hold a general election in the first half of November.

A poll conducted by Nikkei/TV TOKYO shows that the public strongly supports 58-year-old Kono to succeed Suga Yoshihide.
