This month welcomes spring with events centered on Earth Day, a celebration first held on April 22, 1970, to support environmental protection.
The Museum of Natural and Cultural History will host an afternoon of walks and lectures. Be sure to check out their exhibit “Climate Change, Dynamic Landscapes, and Evolution.” Join your peers on the annual UO Earth Service Day to make a positive difference for the environment. And experience the devastating wildfires that ravaged Oregon forests in 2020 with “Spooky Forest,” an art exhibit accompanied by UO sound artist Jon Bellona’s haunting sound installation “Wildfire.”

Ukrainian filmmaker, illustrator and multimedia artist Sashko Danylenko will present his illustration series, “Superheroes Among Us: Art and the Ukrainian Resistance’, on April 23 at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Danylenko’s work depicts the incredible resistance of ordinary Ukrainians to Russian aggression. His manifesto reads: “With fire, words, pixels, letters, musical notes, laughter and magic to destroy enemies. “

Beginning April 24, “ghost forestSarah Grew will be on display at the LaVerne Krause Gallery in Lawrence Hall. Following the 2020 Oregon wildfires, Grew moved from Black coal is collected from fires to create carbon prints of recorded forest images. Accompanying the exhibition is a powerful ambient sound installation”wildfirewhich plays a wave of flames at the speed of an actual wildfire, was created by Jon Belona, UO sound artist and lecturer in audio production for the School of Music and Dance.

UO Hui ‘O Hawai’i Hosts 48th Annual Gala Luau: We are united At MacArthur Court on April 29. The event will feature authentic Hawaiian food, traditional Hawaiian and Polynesian dancing, and other fun activities centered around Hawaiian culture.

Inspired by my grandmother to start weaving, Tetiana Bondarchuk-Horner Mastering the art form and reconnecting with her Ukrainian heritage. Join her on April 8 in the Museum of Natural and Cultural History gallery to learn about traditional and modern weaving and embroidery of upholstery and experience it first hand on a loom.
Ukrainian artist Marina Malyarenko will discuss art at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on April 15 petri kivka, a traditional art form used to decorate homes and household items. Malyarenko creates paintings using symbols that reflect unity, community, and tradition as an act of resistance against the forces that suppress Ukrainian culture.

Join artist Naama Tsabar on April 13 at Lawrence Hall Visiting Artist Lecture Series Artist Lectures. Tsabar incorporates elements of sculpture, music, performance and architecture into her interactive works. She will discuss interactivity within the exhibition field, the concept and use of various performative elements in the work, and feminist approaches to performance and community. On April 20, the Artist Series presents Jim Drain’s talk “Make Time: Craft SculptureDrain added braids as body substitutes to his sculptures. Lectures are live-streamed and archived on YouTube.

reproduce”next action’, a collaboration between Orchestra Next and DanceAbility that premiered last summer and will be performed at Dougherty Dance Theater in the Gerlinger Annex on April 7. Orchestra Next is the Eugene Ballet’s training orchestra and orchestra in residence. DanceAbility uses Improvised dance to promote artistic expression and exploration among people with and without disabilities.

Every year, students from the School of Music and Dance take part in the UO Student Concerto and Aria Competition. The hotly contested project opens April 7. April 14, Northwest Percussion Festival Dai Fujikura will premiere “Dai Dai” for marimba solo and three percussionists by Gene Koshinski, Casey Cangelosi, Eriko Daimo and Piue Cheung. Presented by ChamberMusic@Beall medieval trio. After a sold-out show in Portland, the Scandinavian folk trio will perform on April 23rd. Oregon Composers Forum and Delgany String Quartet New music will be performed on April 18. Oregon Wind Orchestraconsisting of wind, brass and percussion students, will perform on April 26.

On April 18, the Erb Memorial Union Ballroom will host Be Yourself with Joe Kyemusician, storyteller and community organizer in immigrant communities.
