kabul [Afghanistan]March 25 (ANI): Despite the Taliban’s grip on power, an Afghan entrepreneur has brought about a new wave of change in the country by helping young girls to be educated in different subjects, Khaama Press reported.

The 43-year-old entrepreneur, who ran a restaurant in Kabul before the Taliban took over, is now “secretly” teaching girls.

She chose to stay in Afghanistan and provide a safety net for certain Afghan women who had nowhere to go rather than leave the country.

“I felt like an earthquake had taken away everything from me,” the businesswoman was quoted by Khaama Press. The Taj Begum restaurant was closed because the Taliban did not allow women to run such businesses. But leaving, along with thousands of others who fear a return to the brutal Taliban rule of the 1990s, was not an option for the trailblazer.

“Half of society has been wiped off the face of the earth. As a woman, I take up my responsibility to act not only for my own interests but for the interests of all women,” she said, according to the Afghan News Agency.

The Afghan businesswoman set up the Mothers Education Center after the change of government (MEC). According to Khaama Press, the agency offers 500 girls the opportunity to receive instruction in a variety of areas, including math, physics, drawing, photography, jewelry creation and English.

Women in the country were the worst victims after the fall of Ashraf Ghani’s government and the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul. The country bans women from holding leadership positions and from traveling unless accompanied by a male companion.

The Taliban promised to reopen all schools on March 23, 2022, but on that date they again closed the secondary school for girls.

There is no word yet on when or if those schools will reopen or whether the ban will be indefinite.

The Taliban say women’s rights are an internal Afghan issue that should not be interfered with by foreign countries.

Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, said: “They should understand their responsibilities in Afghanistan. They imposed sanctions on the Afghan people and these women. They froze funds and did not allow improvement.” (Ani)
