Will California Governor Gavin Newson be kicked out of the ballot? | Election News

[ad_1]

San Francisco, California – The Republicans can dismiss the Democratic governors of dark blue states.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (Gavin Newsom) will face a high-stakes election on September 14, which may replace him with one of dozens of candidates, including one who opposes abortion and praises the former Popular conservative radio host for Republican President Donald Trump.

Newsom is in Recall election –Republican voters tried to remove him from office. Nationally, the result may be a weather vane for the mid-term congressional elections in 2022, and the top Democrats are vigorously supporting Newsom.

This week, Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to the Bay Area to support Newsom, and President Joe Biden is expected to join his campaign next week.

Registered voters receive mailed ballots, which raise two questions: First, should Newsom be recalled? If the voter’s answer is yes, they can choose to replace him from a list of 46 candidates.

If 50% or more votes against Newsom’s removal, he will continue to serve. If a majority of votes agree to remove him, he will be dismissed, and the candidate with the most votes on the second question will replace him.

Critics of the removal say the process is unfair, because, for example, 49% of voters may vote against Newsom’s removal, and his successor may have a smaller proportion of the remaining votes.

How did we get here?

Not every state has an election to recall, but in California, any voter can initiate a decision to remove elected officials if they get enough signatures.

California voters have been starting to remove them, but they do not often gain traction—this is only the second time in state history to remove a governor, and the fourth time in American history to remove a governor.

According to the Associated Press, in February 2020, retired police officer Orrin Heatlie (Newsom) told undocumented people not to open the door unless the police had an arrest warrant and the remarks angered him, so he started recall.

Heatlie and volunteers collected thousands of signatures from other Republicans who didn’t like Newsom, but they needed the signatures of 12% of voters (1.5 million people) in the last election.

Two events caused the wind to recede. The judge gave the recall organizers an extra four months to collect signatures on the grounds of the COVID pandemic. In November, Newsom and 11 friends and lobbyists attended a non-masked dinner at a luxurious restaurant. Dinner prices start at $350 per person. At the same time, he also told Californians to wear masks and avoid eating with their families Thanksgiving dinner.

Various political factions believed that his behavior was hypocritical and contributed to and signed the recall work.Although Newsom admits him Should set a better example Due to not attending the dinner, the effort to remove them exceeded the threshold of required votes.

Sarah Hill, an associate professor of political science at California State University, said Newson’s actions confirmed the public’s perception. “It fits people’s perceptions [of Newsom], It does provide the role model people need,” she said.

“This guy is an elite and doesn’t understand what ordinary Californians are dealing with; he is out of touch, and we need to do something about it,” she said when describing the public perception. “So it provides this motivation.”

Voters wishing to recall Newsom cited a variety of reasons; a recent poll by the U.S. Bureau of Investigation found that those who voted to recall him stated that this was due to his response to COVID, the handling of COVID restrictions, and business and school closure. Approximately 11% pointed out his behavior at the luxurious dinner party.

How likely is Newsom to be removed?

In early August, the polls narrowed to fierce competition between voters who wanted to stay and remove the governor, which put Newsom at risk.

The Democrats wanted him to stay, but they did not initially participate in the recall like the Republicans. “He has what we call the enthusiasm gap,” explains Mindy Romero, founder and director of the Sacramento Center for Inclusive Democracy.

She explained that until August, the governor ignored the recall, but the numbers forced him to change his strategy and he began to designate it as an urgent threat.

“Especially in the past two weeks, he changed his methods and really improved the level of the game. He really said that the stakes are high, the stakes are too high, it is a matter of life and death. I think it is effective,” Romero said.

Another force that inspired Democrats was the rise of Larry Elder, a popular conservative radio host who is now the leading candidate among voters who wish to recall Newsom.

During his career, Elder made a series of sexist remarks. He promoted the textbook “How to Become a Good Wife” from the 1950s. The textbook told women to prepare dinner for their husbands and not to complain, claiming that women knew less about politics, economics, and current affairs than men. The Los Angeles Times reported that he recommended Some women who participated in the women’s march against President Trump were “safe” from sexual assault because they were not attractive.

According to CNN, in his radio program advertisement in 1996, he said that women would not face a glass ceiling in their careers and that blacks “exaggerated the importance of racism.”

Elder opposed abortion, hoped to end Newsom’s requirements for vaccines and masks, and said Trump was “almost God sent”-these positions may inspire Democrats to vote to prevent him from getting out.

Romero said that Newsom made the election a left-leaning choice between him and Elder, thereby consolidating Elder’s position as a conservative frontrunner.

“He is crowning the front runner he is happy to have,” she said.

Current polls show that voters tend to keep Newsom. A poll conducted by SurveyUSA from September 7 to 8 found that 54% of possible voters would stay as governor, while 41% wanted him to be removed from office.

What does the recall mean for mid-2022?

As election day approaches, activists who support the recall and Elder are holding a rally to fight for the vote. Across the country, political strategists and the media are circling, waiting for data that can be picked from clues before mid-2022.

“This is really about 2022,” explained Raphael Sonesnshein, a political scientist and head of the Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs at California State University. He said that analysts want to know what strategy is most effective and which base can be more mobilized. “People are looking for the guts of the chicken to understand what’s going on there.”

If Newsom survives, he will face a general election in November 2022. If he is kicked out, his successor will only be in power for one year before the next election.

The California recall was originally to check power, but in the end any party can use the results for political gain.

Regardless of the outcome, Romero said that the success of the recall encouraged Republicans. She explained that mid-term elections usually shift to the party that lost the last election, and this recall gives Republicans a strong argument that “we are taking back our country.”

“For Republican strategists, being able to point out what happened in the recall is a dream come true,” she said.
