UAE fined Dh200,000: Police warn against spreading fake news, rumours- News

Ras Al Khaimah Police has issued a reminder on the consequences and penalties involved in spreading fake news and rumors in the UAE.

In an online post, authorities reminded residents of the definition of fake news, as well as the amount of fines and jail time for anyone caught committing a crime.

According to UAE law, the following acts are prohibited and perpetrators can be arrested Dh100,000 to Dh200,000 fine and one to two years in prison. UAE residents may not:

– Publish, disseminate, redistribute, disseminate or redistribute false news or data, or false, tendentious, misleading or erroneous rumors or reports, or rumors or reports that are contrary to official announcements

– Playing provocative advertisements that incite or incite public opinion, disrupt social order, spread panic, endanger public interests, the national economy, public order or public health

Those found engaging in these acts will be fined Dh100,000 and imprisoned for one year. However, the fine is increased to Dh200,000 and two years’ imprisonment if the above acts result in inciting and provoking public opinion against any UAE entity or authority, or are committed in a situation of epidemic, crisis, emergency or disaster.
