New Delhi [India]March 26 (ANI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Canadian High Commissioner on Saturday following a security breach at the Indian embassy in Ottawa.

“The Canadian High Commissioner was summoned yesterday to express our strong concerns about this week’s actions by separatist and extremist elements against our diplomatic missions and consulates in Canada,” the MEA said in a statement released Sunday.

The MEA statement said the Indian government had requested an explanation of how the elements breached the security of Indian diplomatic missions and consulates in the presence of the police.

“The Government of Canada is reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and is required to arrest and prosecute individuals identified as having been involved in such conduct,” the statement further explained.

Canada’s foreign ministry said it expects the Canadian government to take tough measures against such anti-India separatists.

“The Government of Canada is expected to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our diplomats and the security of diplomatic premises so that they can perform normal diplomatic functions,” the release said.

Supporters of Khalistan allegedly protested outside the Indian embassy in Canada last week. They held up slogans in support of Khalistan and allegedly attacked journalists of Indian descent who were present.

Supporters of Khalistan began targeting the Indian consulate after India began a hunt for separatist leader Amritpal Singh and hundreds of his aides were arrested in India.

The Indian High Commission in Canada was also targeted by Khalistan supporters this week, after Australia, the UK and the US.

In early February, India’s honorary consulate was vandalized by a Khalistani flag. Recently, Indian consulates in the UK and the US were also attacked by pro-Khalistan supporters. (Arnie)
