Saadiyat Island is easy to pass on appearances alone. With rugged, sun-white beaches, turquoise surf, dolphin and turtle inhabitants, and a vibrant food scene, it’s easy to fall in love at first sight. But its beauty is much more than that. The ongoing Saadiyat Cultural District project is curating a network of museums, galleries and sites, each as compelling as the priceless collections they contain. A place of learning, of appreciation and awe, of coloring the past and celebrating the future.
The miracle that recently opened its doors in the area represents a true beacon of love, tolerance and peace. Abraham Family Home Inside are three places of worship of the Abrahamic religion.
When complete, the Saadiyat Cultural District will be one of the most populous and globally relevant cultural centers in the world. If you’re curious about what’s to come, these are all confirmed builds that are currently underway.
What new museums and galleries are there in Abu Dhabi?
teamLab phenomenon
Due for completion in 2024, teamLab Phenomena is the result of a collaboration between DCT Abu Dhabi, Miral and teamLab – and as you can see from the renderings, the result looks set to be an engineering masterpiece. It is currently under construction in the hive of mega-project activity, the Saadiyat Cultural District. The architectural marvel this building represents is more than superficial. The futuristic space will span 17,000 square meters of gallery space and is billed as the “House of Infinite Curiosity”. It’s a really cool concept where the series will be curated around the themes of “environmental phenomena” and “offering a new perspective on the world”. The real genius here, though, is that the exhibits will be shaped by their changing environments and, like their organic inspirations, grow and evolve in imitation of the theme. Each piece will be designed to respond to its specific local context within the teamLab Phenomena building, and the interactions it encounters. This ever-changing virtual world means every visit for every guest produces a different experience.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
The Frank Gehry-designed project is due for completion in 2025 Guggenheim Museum Jagged shadows will be added to the Saadiyat Cultural District skyline. True to the spirit of the Guggenheim (and conceived in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation), the plans for the building feature a modern, unconventional, yet remarkably beautiful design. The same is true of the outside, and the same is true of the inside. Inside, you’ll find 28 galleries spanning 11,600 square meters, with a further 23,000 square meters of exhibition space contained in unique cones and terraces connected to the building. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will present a range of modern and contemporary art, with a special focus on works from the West Asia, North Africa and South Asia (WANASA) region. The museum’s mission is to provide a platform for artists in the WANASA region, to commission the work of artists who are at the cusp of creative innovation, and to illuminate how “interconnected histories and cultures” help shape our world. Commenting on the project, His Excellency Mohammad Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The museum will also act as a citizen through its mission to stimulate wider interest in modern and contemporary art globally, promoting meaningful Diversity and inclusion in cultural exchange. As we move forward with our plans, recognizing the museum’s impact on our vision for the emirate’s cultural and creative industries will be critical.”
Louvre Abu Dhabi Apartments
The Louvre Abu Dhabi represents the cultural center of the emirate, but it may soon be the centerpiece of your living room too, after local developer Aldar made a truly shocking announcement. Once complete, Aldar’s Louvre Abu Dhabi Apartments will be a 400-apartment residential complex with an iconic address, stunning sea views and next-door neighbor status to one of the world’s most impressive collections of art and history One of the cultural relics collection. The structure will include Le Salon Détente – a lounge for residents featuring art curated in consultation with experts from Louvre Abu Dhabi; a 12-seat Cinema Privé private cinema experience; a wellness center – —Spa Bien-être, which will of course have a gym, sauna, yoga and meditation space; there will also be an indoor children’s playroom, aptly called the Creativité Room. It’s all part of Saadiyat Grove, a 242,000-square-metre, AED10 billion development that will also include retail and entertainment attractions, other residential properties, two news hotels and co-working spaces.
Zayed National Museum
Once done, Zayed National Museum will be an architectural marvel, a home befitting the inspiring story of our great nation and its visionary founder, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918–2004). Situated on Saadiyat Island, this stunning building with so much cultural significance was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners . The Zayed National Museum is conceived as a mixed-use space, a public and civic building – a hub for discussion and learning, celebrating the stories of the UAE’s colorful heritage and its connections to the wider world. Expect fascinating exhibitions that trace the UAE’s journey as an influential nation, from an ecosystem formed over millions of years to the first human settlers who arrived in the region some 200,000 years ago, to modern times – trade, development And prosperity paves the way for the UAE to a unique bright future.
Natural History Museum
Abu Dhabi’s Natural History Museum will be the fourth museum in the Saadiyat Cultural District (after the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim Museum) and will open in Saadiyat in 2025. Open on Diat Island. To unravel the 13.8-billion-year-old origin story of the universe, the site will also include a scientific research center “that will conduct research in zoology, paleontology, marine biology, molecular research and earth sciences.” The project was announced by Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed and promised to “help find solutions for the future of our planet”. We also performed contextual confirmation of two flagship objects d’awe – Stan, a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton; and the 7-billion-year-old Murchison meteorite. We’ve heard there will be a preview of the 2023 Stegosaurus skeleton this year as well.
saadiyat grove
We now know that Saadiyat Grove will play a major role in the look and layout of Saadiyat Island, a mixed leisure, commercial and residential project that looks connected (or close enough) to individual cultural megaprojects and Mamsha Al Saadiyat, a seaside entertainment district. The big numbers we have so far are that the launch date is set for sometime in 2023. There will be a “town square”, more than 70 retail stores, a gym, cinema, offices and 50,000 square meters of dining space. Aldar’s website describes some of the aesthetic experiences you can expect, saying “interactive artwork and digital murals surround you.” The Louvre Residences Abu Dhabi will also form part of the project. When complete, it will be a 400-apartment complex with an iconic address, stunning ocean views and next-door neighbor status featuring one of the most impressive collections of art and historical artefacts in the world.
