Prime Minister of Malaysia and the opposition sign a cooperation agreement | Political News

After months of political instability after the seizure of power, the deal should consolidate Ismail Sabri’s support in Parliament.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will sign a cooperation agreement with the country’s opposition to strengthen his support and end months of political instability as the government is struggling to cope with the surge in COVID-19 driven by the Delta variant.

The government and opposition representatives announced in a statement on Sunday evening that the agreement will be signed at 5 pm (13:00 GMT) on Monday.

The Malaysian Parliament has met for the first time on Monday since Ismail Sabri, a senior member of the Malay National Unity Organization (UMNO), took office after his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin resigned last month. . The king is a constitutional monarch, and he urged the new prime minister to hold a vote of confidence to prove his support.

The statement said that the agreement aims to create political stability, “to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and to rejuvenate the economy through bipartisan cooperation.”

On Friday, Ismail Sabri announced a series of political reforms, including limiting the term of office of the prime minister to 10 years and implementing a lowering of the voting age to 18 years, which was passed by the previous government. He said his government will also work more closely with the opposition parties on legislation to ensure that the two parties reach an agreement and raise the position of opposition leader to the same level and salary as cabinet ministers.

Muhyiddin, who became prime minister following a power grab that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan coalition that was elected in May 2018, stepped down in August after a rocky 17 months in power.

Senior Umno politicians in his coalition often threatened to withdraw support for Muhyiddin, and parliamentary meetings were suspended under a state of emergency declared in January.

Although Ismail Sabri is from Umno, he is not the leader of the party. Its party chairman Ahmed Zahid Hamidi and other senior members are facing trial for corruption.

Ismail Sabri recently took a photo with former Prime Minister Najib Razak on trust, money laundering and abuse of power.
