NEW YORK, March 30 (AP) — As Donald Trump blasts possible prosecutions in New York, his team is leaning toward a strategy that has quietly become a cornerstone of his 2024 presidential campaign: posting messages targeting social media. The media produced a video reacting to the news and outlining his agenda for a possible second term.

The videos feature the former president speaking directly to the camera on topics ranging from Ukraine and “saving” the suburbs to dismantling the “deep state,” and they’re often peppered with his familiar dark rhetoric and intrigue.

But his team sees them as a tool to bypass traditional news outlets and speak directly to supporters, and part of a broader effort to steer Trump toward policy rather than his own grievances and obsessions with the past.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven said: “This certainly sets the flag for President Trump and the campaign to lay down very specific policy prescriptions. So far, no campaign has done this, which is kind of reminiscent of In 2016, President Trump rolled out policies left and right,” Zhang said. “We want to focus on policy and do it in a different way than regular activity.”

The effort continues even as Trump’s campaign has grappled with the prospect that he could become the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges.

The campaign strategy could give him insight into how his team will move forward if he ends up on trial in New York or faces indictment in other ongoing state and federal investigations.

On Wednesday afternoon alone, Trump posted six videos on his Truth Social website, including several bashing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is seen as Trump’s most important Republican president. Candidates nominate potential competitors.

In one video, Trump thanked supporters for attending his recent rally in Texas and asked them to “register, donate and volunteer for our campaign.” In another video, he lashed out at federal and state prosecutors who have been investigating his actions. “Electoral meddling through prosecutors is the new Democratic vote,” Trump charged.

The made-for-the-Internet videos, often posted on Trump’s website, are a mix of angry all-caps letters and flattering articles from conservative sites, and show Trump formulating topics ranging from crime and immigration to inflation policy plan. He envisions flying cars in the cities of the future and promises to impose tariffs on most foreign goods, increase penalties for minors who commit crimes and rid the Pentagon of “warmongers.”

And there’s more: Trump was filmed 27 times during a recent meeting, underscoring the campaign’s embrace of the format.

The videos don’t always get mainstream media attention. But they routinely garner hundreds of thousands of views on platforms like Rumble and Twitter.

Trump allies say the videos come at a pivotal moment in the campaign, which is floundering after lackluster releases and disappointing 2022 midterm election results, with Trump blamed for failure by Republicans. The culprit for the expected return.

The first video came on the same day as the widely criticized digital trading card announcement, and after Trump dined with a prominent white nationalist and a rapper who promoted anti-Semitism. At the time, even people close to Trump publicly expressed doubts that he was serious about running another campaign.

They argue that the videos prove that Trump has re-election plans and is running not just to avoid indictment, but because of his lingering anger at the 2020 White House race, which he continues to falsely insist on, thereby helping Changed the narrative and he won.

“These policy videos helped him reposition his candidacy better in a big way,” said Republican strategist Andy Surabian, a close adviser to Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

“It happened slowly, and it happened unnoticed. They didn’t get a lot of attention in the mainstream media, but they kept reminding Republican primary voters that the former president” had a serious vision of 2024, said Surabian. Year Policy Vision.”

They also acquiesce in Trump receiving less and less media attention, including Fox News, as it increasingly embraces DeSantis, and other cable outlets that once eagerly broadcast Trump rallies live and allowed him hours of interviews.

“It’s a way to get around them,” Zhang said. “We all know digital video and social media is one way to do that — directly to people.”

This isn’t the first time a Trump aide has turned to video at an important moment.

On Jan. 6, 2021, hours after his supporters stormed the Capitol to prevent a peaceful transfer of presidential power to Democrat Joe Biden — after desperate aides and allies begged Trump to cancel their After the endorsement — Trump posted a clip from the Rose Garden where he told rioters to “go home now,” while adding: “We love you, you are special.”

The next day, he recorded another video, showing clips at a congressional hearing.

During his 2016 campaign, Trump also turned to the tape to apologize after the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which he used obscene and sexually charged comments about women.

Now, the series of campaign videos is part of a broader focus on Trump’s policies, which are often overshadowed by his more inflammatory rhetoric.

For example, in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in early March, Trump described the 2024 campaign in apocalyptic terms. “In 2016, I declared, I am your voice.” Today I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. For those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution,” he said.

But Trump also spent much of his speech outlining his second-term priorities, from a new crackdown on immigration to building tent cities for the homeless and drug addicts.

The videos are typically filmed once or twice a week in a room near the central “living room” space at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago. After the first video received a better-than-expected response, the campaign realized there was interest in policy content and that the format was more engaging than a traditional news release.

Some videos received widespread attention. Such is the case with his “Leap for American Living Standards” plan, building new futuristic cities on federal land, investing in vertical take-off and landing vehicles, and “baby bonuses” to start a new “baby boom.”

“I think they’ve been very successful,” Trump said of the videos last month on the conservative “Just the News” show. He credits them with recent poll results.

Democrats say the videos simply draw attention back to an unpopular agenda that voters are already against.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said of Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan: The “Donald Trump Policies” video is a consistent reminder that Trump’s second term The administration will build on his disastrous four-year MAGA agenda, “Make America Great Again,” with far more extreme and dangerous proposals.

“While everyone else in 2024 is competing to overtake MAGA Trump, the American people will see an extremely extreme party that they have rejected more than once,” Harrison said. (AP)
