Abu Dhabi announces new speed limits

Abu Dhabi Police has introduced a new minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road from April 1, and violators will face a Dh400 fine from May 1.

Major General Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi, head of the Central Operations Department, said the top speed in the first and second lanes from left was 140 km/h and the minimum speed was 120 km/h.

Police officials confirmed that the third and last lane for heavy vehicles with a speed of 140 km/h will not include minimum speed violations.

“Implementing the minimum speed limit is aimed at improving road safety. It will urge slow-moving vehicles to use appropriate lanes,” Al Muhairi said in a social media post. Minimum and maximum speed limits will be displayed on signs above the highway.

Abu Dhabi Transport System Initiatives

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s new speed limit comes a month after the GCC implemented a bilateral transport system link.

The activation of bilateral linkages in transport systems between the Gulf states paves the way for a uniform policy across the region, punishing violators and motorists being held accountable for fines committed in any state.

Over the years, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have launched several initiatives to promote traffic safety. Abu Dhabi Police launched an SMS alert campaign in September 2022 to encourage active driving behavior by issuing warnings for minor traffic violations.

RTA closes a bridge

In other news, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said the Al Maktoum Bridge linking Bur Dubai and Deira will be partially closed to traffic from 1:00 am to 6:00 am for the remainder of Ramadan. .

The RTA urged motorists to use alternative routes to reach their destinations easily while sharing alternative routes, including Al Garhoud Bridge, Business Bay Bridge, Al Shindagha Tunnel and The Infinity Bridge.
