For seven years, the only bruce springsteen concert In New York, the New Jersey legend performs a stripped-down solo and storytelling performance at the Broadway theater.
But Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, boss Back to his stage-swinging glory – with the E Street Band at his side once again.
In the first regional concert on his 2023 Walking Tour, which begins in February, Springsteen and his beloved backing band perform together in New York for the first time since their “The River” tour in August 2016.
You can feel the excitement and anticipation in the air even before Springsteen and crew take to the stage just 10 minutes after the scheduled 7:30 start time – better to play their famous marathon, three-plus hour concert .
The chants of “Bruuuuuce!” rippling across the stage until the band, one by one, took to the stage, but when Springsteen himself finally came on stage, they reached their highest roar.
“New York City!” he yelled, as if he was as happy as his fellow musicians.
As he sings “Don’t ‘Surrender'” to the “Born in America” anthem, it’s clear the consistent Boss isn’t backing down from his father’s days—even at 73.
Even as he enters “Spectre”—from 2020’s “Letter to You” that finds him facing his own mortality—Springsteen sounds as vibrant as ever.
When Clarence Clemons’ nephew Jake plays the spirit of his late uncle on the saxophone, you’ll feel love from the other side.
Although Springsteen’s latest 2022’s album “Only the Strong Survive” is a single—he nods with a soulful swagger from the Commodores’ cover of “Nightshift”—and the tour is definitely about those special E Street moments, like his reunion with the ace Share-mic partner Steven Van Zandt reprises classics like “Prove It All Night.”
That’s exactly what they do.
