kabul [Afghanistan]April 2 (ANI): A child was killed and three others were injured in an explosion in southern Afghanistan’s Zabul province, the Khaama Press said, citing local sources.

An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the Shah Joy area of Zabul province on Friday night, a provincial police spokesman said.

According to reports, a group of children were playing beside a tractor in the field when the bomb exploded, killing the children and injuring three others.

A similar incident occurred on Tuesday when an explosion killed two children and wounded four others in the northern Jowzjan province, according to local sources.

According to Khaama Press, there has been an increase in incidents caused by unexploded ordnance explosions in parts of the country in recent days, resulting in casualties of men, women and children.

Earlier, an explosion outside the Taliban-led Afghan foreign ministry killed six people and wounded many more.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, ToloNews reported.

Kabul security spokesman Khaled Zadran said the explosion happened near a security checkpoint in Kabul’s Malik Azgar Square.

Monday’s incident happened around lunchtime, when the city was particularly crowded as government office workers left early during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan. The explosion occurred as foreign ministry employees were leaving their offices, Khaama Press reported.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai also condemned the act as a violation of religion and human values, ToloNews reported.

According to reports, Afghanistan is one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world. Dozens of people, mostly children, are killed and maimed every month due to unexploded ordnance left over from the past four decades of war and internal conflict, according to Khaama Press.

Although the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works directly with UNAMA and other relevant government agencies, the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance poses a significant threat to the lives of ordinary people.

Since November 2022, Afghanistan’s international partners have generously supported demining efforts in the country. These countries include Australia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
