Organizers have announced that AJ Odudu will join special guests from the worlds of music, sport and entertainment in celebrating the Eurovision Song Contest, which will host the National Lottery’s grand Eurovision Song Contest.
The 35-year-old TV star will perform a 90-minute outdoor show on Sunday night, May 7, and will offer thousands of tickets to the public for free on Wednesday, April 5 at 10am.
Although it was a “closely guarded secret”, organizers said the show would feature musical performances by “iconic Liverpool natives and Eurovision superstars”, as well as dancers and aerial performers.
There will also be a “state-of-the-art digital map ever seen” in front of St George’s Hall in Liverpool, organizers say, along with many other surprises for the evening.
The show promises to feature prominent faces from the worlds of music, sport and entertainment, as well as local cultural and arts organisations, and will “celebrate the unique partnership between Liverpool, Ukraine and Eurovision”.
Organizers say audiences will “enjoy a dynamic show” expected to take off at the opening of the European Capital of Culture 2008.
TV presenter Odudu said: “I am delighted to be hosting the National Lottery’s big Eurovision welcome event. It will be an incredible show with some amazing performances and all that Eurovision has to offer Miracle.
“I can’t wait for the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in one of my favorite cities – come celebrate with us.”
Tickets will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and, in addition to a £2 fee, are free for National Lottery players as “a thank you for their £330m contribution to more than 3,600 music and cultural projects in Liverpool alone”, a statement said .
Some tickets will also be available to National Lottery players with postcodes in the Liverpool City area during the 10am pre-sale on 4 April.
Claire McColgan, Liverpool’s cultural director, said: “This will be an incredible show and we are delighted that residents of the Liverpool city have had the opportunity to buy themselves tickets to this unique event.
“It brings out all the vibrancy and magic of the Eurovision Song Contest, combined with Liverpool’s unparalleled musical heritage, a fusion of the best music from the UNESCO World Music Capital and inspiration from Ukraine – it really will be our Eurovision Song Contest. An unmissable moment in the journey.”
General tickets for the National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome go on sale on 5 April at 10am.
