The UAE’s Ramadan 1 Billion Meals campaign raised an impressive AED 247 million in just one week in a show of staggering generosity, and as its name suggests, aims to distribute 10 billion meals to the world’s poor during Ramadan 100 million meal month and beyond.

The event, which received donations from 13,220 individuals, businesses, and public and private sector actors, is a great example of the goodwill of the people of the UAE who always respond to requests to help those in need with grace and kindness.

The campaign was launched within the framework of the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiative to mobilize local and regional support for the launch of the AED 1 billion food endowment fund that will facilitate implementation within a sustainable institutional framework Sustainable programs to fight and eradicate hunger.

The event also offers individuals, corporations, business people and philanthropists new ways to give and make a difference, further promoting a culture of giving as a traditional development tool and an investment in the future.

This year’s 1 billion meal donation builds on the success of previous food aid campaigns launched over the past three years under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Above, 10 million meals were served starting Ramadan 2020, the first and largest solidarity drive of its kind to support victims of the Covid-19 pandemic in the UAE. It will be followed by the 100 Million Meals 2021 campaign, the largest regional food support campaign covering 20 countries in the Arab region, Africa and Asia. Last year’s Billion Meals event was the largest of its kind in the region, delivering one billion meals across 50 countries.

Needless to say, humanitarian efforts in the UAE continue throughout the year, and as a country and its people, actively helping others and going the extra mile has become part of our way of life.

Also this week, Operation Valiant Rider 2 entered its 50th day of relief efforts in the UAE to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey. After the February 6 earthquake, UAE search and rescue teams were dispatched to search for survivors under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The UAE has also provided search and rescue equipment to the Syrian Civil Defense and trained Latakia civil defense officers and local military construction teams to form well-trained squads to the highest standards of search and rescue protocols.

In addition, the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) played a key role in distributing food parcels to victims, providing medicines to hospitals and establishing temporary shelters for those affected by the earthquake.

The UAE search and rescue team was the last classified international team to leave Turkey after the Turkish government announced the end of the search and rescue operation, during which time they managed to rescue 10 people and recover 26 bodies, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the UAE was helping other countries deal with the pandemic while taking aggressive action at home to combat the spread of the virus. The country has provided vital medical supplies, made UAE-owned facilities abroad available to local governments, made donations to local initiatives and assisted in the repatriation of foreigners, prompting the United Nations to praise the UAE government for providing medical and protective supplies to African countries during the pandemic . “Thanks to the UAE Government for their generous support for this operation. WHO’s Regional Logistics Center in Dubai has played a key role in ensuring these supplies are ready and delivered where they are needed most,” said WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari said.

In another recent example, the UAE sent 14 tons of aid to Ukraine, including blankets and personal care items, to help people survive the harsh winter as part of the UAE’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine amid the ongoing crisis, That includes $100 million to aid Ukrainian civilians.

These stories help us understand the importance of humanitarian gestures that have always been part of the Emirati tradition. Recognized during his lifetime as a symbol of love, generosity and tolerance, under the direction of the late Sheikh Zayed, the UAE carries on the legacy of the UAE’s life through its successor, the late Sheikh Khalifa and the present It continues under the benevolent leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

These are stories that I am happy to pass on to my children because they make me proud to be an Emiratis. I thank all those who have donated time, energy and money to these events, big and small, and wish you all a very happy Ramadan.
