[ad_1]

Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA), the UAE’s largest industrial company outside of oil and gas, has announced the American University of Dubai as the winner of its fifth edition of Al Robot. AI Robot is a competition that challenges students from UAE universities and higher education institutions to design and build a prototype industrial robot for deployment at EGA’s aluminum smelter.

The winning team from the American University of Dubai were Mostafa Aboelnaga, Mohammad Rashwan, Mohammad AlHadi, Yassin Abdelmeguid and Bilal Serieh. They are supervised by Dr. Salem Haggag.

For this year’s competition, the students were challenged to design and build a robot that can measure the thickness of materials inside EGA electrolyzers, a task currently done manually. Through this challenge, students are able to apply their academic knowledge in robotics and automation to think creatively and develop practical solutions for the aluminum industry.

Five teams were shortlisted and received a grant of AED 50,000 each from the EGA to design and manufacture their robots, with three teams advancing to the finals. The other shortlisted teams are from Heriot-Watt University and Abu Dhabi University.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, said: “I congratulate the American University of Dubai team on the win. The skills that the students practiced at EGA’s Al Robot Competition are important for the UAE’s industrial future and the achievement of 300 billion actions. I hope these students will now be inspired Inspired to pursue a career in industry in the UAE.”

cooperation with universities

EGA’s technical and development teams work extensively with universities in the UAE and internationally, with academic partners including Khalifa University, American University of Sharjah, Rochester Institute of Technology and the UAE’s Higher Institute of Technology, as well as Auckland, the University of New South Wales and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Through the EGA Ambassador Programme, EGA also works with universities to bridge the gap between academic study and work experience. The initiative is spearheaded by young Emirati engineers and professionals who demonstrate the practical application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in UAE industry.

The EGA plans to create 500 additional opportunities for UAE nationals by 2026 to secure future talent and provide opportunities for young UAE nationals in industry, with a target of 45% focused Emiratisation. By the end of 2022, EGA achieved a 42% focus emirates rate, one of the highest. — trade arab news agency
