A young Indian man who was seriously injured in a bus accident while traveling from Oman to Dubai three years ago won Dh5 million in compensation.
The life of Muhammad Baig Mirza, then 20, was turned upside down by the tragic accident.
According to his lawyer, the UAE Insurance Authority, the Primary Compromise Court initially awarded him Dh1 million as compensation. The petitioner then contacted the Dubai Court of First Instance and obtained a judgment amending the compensation figure to Dh5 million. The insurance company challenged the case twice to the Supreme Court, which upheld the original verdict.
In June 2019, a bus traveling from Oman to the UAE crashed in Dubai when the driver crashed into an elevated guardrail at the entrance to the car park of Al Rashidiya Metro Station on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. The upper left part of the bus was completely destroyed in the accident, which killed 17 of the 31 passengers, 12 of whom were Indians.
Mirza, an engineering student, was seriously injured on his way back from Muscat after spending Eid holidays with his mother’s relatives. He spent more than two months at Rashid Hospital in Dubai, where he spent 14 days in a coma before spending several months in a rehabilitation center.
Mirza was unable to complete his studies for the final exams that are part of the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
Following his treatment, specialist doctors said the young man’s chances of returning to a normal life were very low due to the severe brain damage caused by the accident. Additionally, forensic experts assessed injuries to his skull, ears, mouth, lungs, arms and legs.
According to the report, which said Mirza suffered permanent damage to 50 percent of his brain, the UAE Supreme Court directed insurance companies to pay damages.
