What are the latest regulations for bicycles and scooters in Abu Dhabi?

[ad_1]

Failure to follow these rules will result in fines…

Hate them or rate them, electric scooters are a form of transportation to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Their use has exploded over the past few years, largely because they offer an affordable way to commute and are a relatively low-carbon alternative to cars.

But with all great modes of transport comes great responsibility – and with some of these vehicles capable of speeds exceeding 40 km/h, safety concerns (for riders and other road users) proliferate as adoption increases.

The new rules were developed through the joint efforts of the Integrated Transport Center (ITC), Abu Dhabi Municipality and Department of Transport (DMT), and Abu Dhabi Police GHQ. This is to keep all road users, pedestrians, cyclists and electric vehicle operators as safe as possible.

all rise

A recent statement from the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Center (ITC) clearly states that sit-on scooters are now banned. Perhaps unsurprising, as they are often associated with reduced visibility and poor maneuverability.

Where can I ride?

Only one rider per bike/scooter/e-bike.

Bicycles and scooters should use cycle lanes whenever possible and keep to the far right of the path.

Cyclists and motorcyclists must give priority to pedestrians and slow down at intersections and intersections.

Driving in the wrong direction (driving in the wrong direction) is strictly prohibited.

You may not tether your vehicle to a “traffic light, pole or light pole”.

Seizing other vehicles, even temporarily stationary vehicles, is also prohibited.

safety equipment

Riders must wear protective helmets and reflective clothing if operating their equipment at night.

Bicycles and e-bikes must be fitted with white headlights and red taillights that can be turned on for night riding, or red reflectors.

There must also be a handlebar mounted audible warning device (like a bell) and brakes (working) on at least the rear wheel.

Bike and Scooter Rentals

People who want to rent out bicycles and scooters must have the relevant permit issued by the Integrated Transportation Centre.

Lessees are responsible for ensuring that their equipment complies with “approved specifications” and must perform regular maintenance on all their equipment.

The rental company must also provide a contact number in case of any breakdown or emergency.

Insurance must fully cover potential road use accidents.

All e-bikes are required to be fitted with a GPS tracking device.

A list of safety and operating instructions must be provided with the rental and affixed to the actual vehicle.
