The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has issued a new Dh1,000 plastic banknote. It will be available at banks and exchange offices starting April 10, 2023.
The obverse of the new banknote depicts the image of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan next to a model of the space shuttle inspired by his 1974 partnership with A meeting of NASA pioneers.
This ambition is realized on the 2021 UAE Mars mission “Hope Probe” tour and is reflected on the new banknote by placing an image of “UAE Mars Exploration Mission – Hope Probe” on top of the space shuttle and on the An image of the astronaut is added to the front of the banknote as a security feature to commemorate the first Emirati astronaut in space.
The back of the banknote features an image of Abu Dhabi’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which will play a key role in the country’s energy diversification and reduction of carbon emissions.
To boost consumer confidence and combat counterfeiting, the new banknotes include advanced security features such as SPARK Flow® Dimensions, which are being used for the first time on banknotes circulating in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In addition, the UAE is the first country in the MENA region to issue the largest multi-coloured KINEGRAM® surface-applied foil stripe in a new banknote.
In addition to the striking visuals in terms of anti-counterfeiting and design, the UAE Central Bank has added bold braille symbols to help blind and visually impaired consumers identify the banknote denomination.
CBUAE is also coordinating with ATM operating companies to reprogram ATM machines to accept the new banknotes.
