More capacity, more flights

Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said the expansion of the air transport agreement between Canada and the United Arab Emirates will allow airlines to introduce more flight options and routes. The United Arab Emirates is Canada’s largest air transport market in the Middle East. Under the expanded agreement, each country will have capacity for 21 flights per week, allowing 50% more flights than the previous maximum possible.

The new rights under the extended agreement are immediately available to airlines. Transport Canada believes the move will improve the country’s global connectivity and support tourism and trade activity. This is the second extension of the shipping agreement with the UAE. The agreement was first struck in 1999 and expanded in 2018.

Omar Algabra says,

“The expansion of the Canada-United Arab Emirates air transport agreement will improve Canada’s international connectivity and strengthen people-to-people and business connections. As we continue to support the recovery of Canada’s aviation industry, we are pleased with this expanded The agreement will benefit even more Canadian travelers, industry stakeholders and workers in the Canadian aviation industry.”

Mary U, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, added that the two countries have a deep relationship. Today’s announcement will make a valuable contribution to helping Canadian companies grow and diversify their markets.

How is the current market service?

According to Cirium, there are 18 weekly flights between Canada and the United Arab Emirates as of April 2023. Only two routes are currently open, operated by three airlines. These routes are Toronto Pearson-Dubai and Toronto Pearson-Abu Dhabi. Air Canada and Emirates operate the first route. The second is Etihad Airways.

Air Canada currently operates seven weekly flights between Toronto and Dubai. Emirates offers five flights per week on this route, but with more seats than Air Canada (2,455 versus 2,086). As expected, Emirates uses its fleet of Airbus A380s on the routewhile Air Canada uses the Boeing 787 Dreamliner 9.

Finally, Etihad Airways offers six weekly flights from Abu Dhabi. It serves the route with a fleet of Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787 Dreamliner 9s. In total, there are 357.8 seats available per week between Toronto and United Arab Emirates.

With the new agreement, new Canadian cities can receive direct flights from the United Arab Emirates. While nothing has been announced yet, we believe cities like Vancouver and Montreal could get direct connections from the United Arab Emirates. For example, Montreal currently has 3 direct routes to the Middle East, operated by Air Canada (to Tel Aviv), Qatar Airways (to Doha) and Royal Jordanian (to Amman). Vancouver does not.
