Abdulnasser Alshaali, UAE Ambassador to India, said that the UAE is honored to be invited by the Indian government to participate in the G20 summit. As the chairman of the group, India extended an invitation to the UAE, and Ambassador Alshaali commended the efforts of the Indian government in organizing the summit.
Speaking to WION’s Sidhant Sibal, the ambassador said: “We are honored to have the invitation from the Indian government, which has been doing a great job and I am sure they will continue to do so until the summit in September.”
Regarding investments in India, including in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Ambassador Alshaali noted that the private sector and businesses have their own investment strategies and approaches. He addressed WION at a large iftar dinner hosted by the UAE embassy, ​​where the entire diplomatic community came together to eat bread as the month of Ramzan was celebrated. The participation of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar also showed the strength of the relationship between the two countries.

WION: You officiated this Iftar ceremony with the participation of the Delhi diplomatic community and EAM Jaishankar. What a big moment…
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: I would like to thank everyone who came here today, especially Dr. Jaishankar Jaishankar for taking time out of his busy schedule to be here. Ramadan is about bringing people together and that’s what I’m saying behind my back. This is just to bring everyone together. So no matter where we come from we all fast in different ways and Ramadan is the month we fast. So we can connect a lot, and there is nothing better than iftar or a meal together.
WION: So how would you describe India’s relationship with the UAE, because it’s a relationship that has really developed over the last five years.
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: Well, I can tell you that we’re just getting started. Lots of exciting things are going to happen. We’ve been doing a lot of things. We are passionate about multiple tracks in different fields. The India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is the start of establishing some kind of economic framework to increase bilateral trade and achieve certain goals. But CEPA is not everything, there are many things in the pipeline.

WION: I2U2 is a result of the Abraham deal, because it led to the normalization of relations between Israel and the UAE, and then this bloc emerged. Where did you see this grouping? Going forward, do you see summit-level meetings taking place, or in-person summits soon?
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: Well, I2U2 is an economic platform, so these four countries are discussing quite a few projects, some of which will be available soon. As far as the summit is concerned. I can’t confirm this right now, but I’m sure the details will come out once a decision is made.
WION: So the Abraham Accords talked about a lot of dividends, but today we see conflicts in West Asia between Israel and Palestine and other countries. Do you think it will affect the Abraham Accords, the good vibe that it created?
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: Well, countries keen on establishing bilateral relations with Israel and expanding economic ties with the country joined the Abraham Accords. Having said that, it means we’re still interested in the things we’ve always been interested in. We still believe in a two-state solution. We will still pursue and drive this. Whenever there is some sort of escalation, our main purpose and main goal is to make sure that the region doesn’t go through that escalation, that it doesn’t get thrown into turmoil because we’re not in the region’s interest and it’s not in our interest. In a peaceful, prosperous and stable community.
WION: So, India is the chair of the G20, and as the chair of the group, it also invited your country. What do you think about India’s invitation and India’s presidency in its super presidency?
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: We are honored to receive the invitation from the Government of India. The Indian government has been doing a great job and I am sure they will continue to do so until the summit in September. We’ve been invited as guest countries in the past, and I can tell you that the work that we’ve seen on the ground and that I’ve been to some of these conferences myself has been outstanding. This is a testament to the work, effort and time that the Indian government has put into this.
WION: So my last question is, we have been investing heavily in India, including recently in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. We have seen the big investment plans that have been announced, can we expect more from the UAE’s investment in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir?
Abdul Nasser Al Shali: Well, I can’t speak for the private sector, I can’t speak for corporations. Both business and the private sector have their own strategies or ways of doing things. It will also depend on investment plans, incentives and any facilities provided to investors. So yes, there are several businesses present. But whether that means higher, higher investment in the future depends on the business itself.
