Sophomore acting major Zay Williams stars as Sheldon Plankton in the upcoming “SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical.” “This is the first time I’ve played an opponent,” Williams said. “Some days it’s hard to get in and understand a character’s mind, and it’s hard to get into a character’s body because he’s a single-celled organism.”

SEMO’s River Campus made waves with the early 2000s children’s TV show “SpongeBob SquarePants.” “SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical” April 12-15 at 7:30pm and April 15-16 at 2pm at Biddle Hall

This musical follows the classic characters of the TV show as they face the eruption of Mount Hummongus. The storyline tells the story of SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends trying to save the town of Bikini Bottom.

“We really wanted to embrace the feeling when these two-dimensional characters on TV are now brought into three dimensions and made more human,” says director Kitrawa.

Lavoie described the show as funny and surprising, while also touching and moving at times.

“We’ve been trying to make sure that we can have the kind of humor and belly laugh that we want, and make it into those moments where you really feel for the character,” Lavoie said.

The songs in the musical are composed by famous artists of different genres according to the plot.

“Every musical number on the show is very different. You have rap songs, you have hip-hop and break-dancing, you have outrageous tap dancing, and you have classical musical theater-style dancing and singing,” says assistant director Danny Lorraine. “Through the numbers, you get a taste of every genre and character.”

There’s more to musical theater than just the characters and the music.

Senior musical theater major Michael Retano plays SpongeBob SquarePants.

“I grew up with SpongeBob SquarePants, and I didn’t know much about the musical until they announced we were going to do it as a show,” Reitano said. “I listened to the show and thought it sounded like fun. When I auditioned, I thought, ‘This is right for me.'”

The show is family friendly and open to all ages.

“Anyone is welcome on this show. Anyone can come to this show, from grandparents to teammates you want to invite, your family, brother, sister. Anyone will love this show, especially if you are a SpongeBob fan ,” Reitano said.
