Abba Guitarist Lasse Wellander has died at the age of 70, his family has announced. The Swedish native died on Friday, April 7, after a battle with cancer.
His family wrote on Wellander’s official Facebook page: “It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep. Lasse has recently fallen ill and as a result the cancer has spread, early on Good Friday. When he died, surrounded by those he loved.”
“You were an amazing musician, one of the few who were humble, but most of all, you were an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. Kind, safe, caring and loving. … And so much more, beyond words. A pivot in our lives, unbelievable that we now have to go on without you.”
The post, written by his family members Lena, Ludvig and Andréas, concluded: “We love you so much and miss you so much.”
Wellander started playing guitar as a child in the early sixties and was part of a local band in his hometown of Nora, Sweden.
In October 1974, Wellander began recording with ABBA their hits “Intermezzo No. 1” and “Crazy World”. He became the lead guitarist of the Eurovision-winning band and toured with them in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1980.
In 2007, Wellander helped record the soundtrack oh mom, Starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm. This musical film about a bride-to-be trying to find her real father follows the hits of ’70s pop group ABBA.

In addition to his collaboration with ABBA, Wellander released seven solo albums, two of which reached the Top 40 Albums chart in the mid-’80s.
In 2005 the Royal Swedish Academy of Music awarded him the Albin Hagström Memorial Prize and in 2018 Wellander received the Swedish Musicians’ Federation’s Studioräven Prize for his work as a session musician.
Weiland’s latest singles — “O Come, All Ye Faithfull,” “Merry-Go-Round” and “Overdrive” — are out in 2022.
