A Chinese scientist has claimed that the Covid-19 virus may have originated in humans, disproving the theory that the virus jumped from animals to humans at a Wuhan market. Tong Yigang of the Beijing University of Chemical Technology said the genetic sequence of the virus samples collected from the South China Seafood Market in Wuhan was “almost identical” to that of patients infected with the new coronavirus, suggesting that, according to him, the virus may have originated from humans.

Tong Yigang told a news conference held by China’s State Council that scientists collected more than 1,300 environmental and frozen animal samples from Wuhan markets between January and March 2020, and they subsequently isolated three virus strains from the environmental samples .

The scientist also dismissed a recent study that suggested raccoons were the origin of the Covid virus.

At the event, Zhou Lei, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said that the place where the new coronavirus was first discovered — Wuhan — may not necessarily be where it originated.

Scientists around the world have long asked China for data to understand the origin of the new coronavirus. Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) slammed China for not sharing enough data, as WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Without full access to the information China has … all assumptions are on the table.”

“That’s the WHO’s position, and that’s why we’ve been asking China to cooperate on this,” he said. If Beijing does provide the missing data, “we’ll know what happened or how it started,” he added.
