PRETORIA, April 10 (AP) — At least seven large electricity pylons collapsed on a highway near South Africa’s capital Pretoria, causing a multi-vehicle crash, city authorities and emergency services said. department said on Monday.

The private Promed paramedic service said two people had “moderate” injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital after being treated at the scene.

The collapse of the towers caused the high-voltage cables to “hang extremely low on the highway,” causing vehicles to swerve to avoid them and lead to the crash, Promed said.

The city of Tshwane, which oversees the Pretoria metropolitan area, said the pylon collapsed on Sunday night.

It’s unclear why they collapsed, but Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink said it was “most likely due to vandalism by criminals.”

The tower had to be repaired after previous attempts were made to steal part of the metal from the base of the tower, Brink said.

Many areas in northern and eastern Pretoria lost power. The city said maintenance crews were battling the rainy weather and there was no estimate for how long those areas would be without power.

Part of the N4 motorway, the main route into Pretoria from the east, is closed. (Associated Press)
