Chael Sonnen reveals Khamzat Chimaev vs. Paulo Costa at UFC fight in Abu Dhabi

Chael Sonnen revealed some interesting tidbits about the middleweight bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Paulo Costa. The fight is apparently set for the UFC’s return to Abu Dhabi later this year.

when he appeared in MMA hoursSonnen spoke about middleweight status after what happened in the main event at UFC 287, with Israel Adesanya defeating Alex Pereira to reclaim the middleweight title.

When asked how Chimaev, who will compete in the 185-pound competition in the future, should progress, Sonnen said he had heard there were already plans for him.

He said:

“So, my understanding is that Khamzat is going to fight Paulo Costa. They even have a date and they’re going out…Abu Dhabi. It’s a co-main event – very relevant – and they’re going to be there for three rounds and Not five rounds.” [2:44:10 – 2:44:21]

American Gangster added that he believed the news surrounding “Borz” and “Borrachinha” had gotten out. He mentioned Costa’s signing a new deal as one of the reasons why the bout was possible, saying:

“it is [Chimaev vs. Costa] Next… I mean, I’m just telling you where it is. I don’t know what I’m revealing, now you’re making me a little nervous, but I’m not sworn to secrecy, everything I just said is true. ” [2:45:28 – 2:45:38]

It remains to be seen whether the middleweight bout, which is believed to be booked for the Abu Dhabi event, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

While speaking with Ariel Helwani MMA hours, Charles Sonnen Said that the UFC may give “Izzy” a new opponent Dricus Du Plessis. The sixth-ranked middleweight is currently on a seven-game winning streak.

He said:

“He’s beaten everybody, some of them twice, and he’s about to beat some of them for the third time. Or, we could drop down the ranks to people who haven’t gotten there yet, and we could bring in Du Plessis, who has African Partner, he’s doing a little bit better, let’s get this done.” [2:37:50 – 2:38:01]

It remains to be seen whether promotion will favor booking Adesanya vs. Du Plessis over another match against their previous opponents.
