thimpu [Bhutan]11th April (ANI): Under the Food Security and Agricultural Productivity Project, Bhutan has launched a female-friendly Made-in-India tiller for pulling weeds in orchards and vegetable plots, which could change gender-based Division of Labor According to The Bhutan Live, Agriculture.

For generations, tilling the land has been seen as a male job, while harvesting and processing crops has been seen as a female job. However, the gender-based division of labor may be changing as more women use tillers.

In Samtse, Bhutan, electric tillers suitable for women were distributed. Chimi Dema (41), a resident of Dorokha village in Samtse district, went to Samtse town to buy a tiller distributed by the district agriculture department.

The tillers are part of a food security and agricultural productivity project aimed at increasing agricultural productivity in the region, The Bhutan Live reported.

Before buying, qimi took the initiative to study the micro tillage machine in depth, and mastered the operation process of the micro tillage machine proficiently.

A mother of two, Chimi sees the tiller as a way to achieve self-reliance and empowerment.

“The normal tiller is not easy for women to handle due to its size and strength. But this mini tiller is different, it is small and easy to use, and any woman can use it with ease,” she said.

In addition, qimi recognizes that micro tillage machines have the potential to solve the problem of limited labor force in rural areas.

“Because the machine can do the work of ten people, we now don’t have to worry about hiring labor for our agricultural work. It’s hard to find labor now and their wages are expensive,” she said.

Yoeseltse resident Tshewang Dorji said it was difficult for them to do a lot of heavy farm work in the hot weather. But according to The Bhutan Live, with the micro tiller, she can do more farming without having to expend a lot of energy.

“With these tillers, I think we can do more vegetable work in our village now. We can’t do much vegetable farming today because we don’t have bulls and power tillers to plow the land,” another resident Penjor said. .

A total of 23 micro tillage machines were distributed to beneficiaries in Dophuchen, Norboogang, Yoeseltse, Sang-Ngag-Chhoeling and Tendu gewogs on a 50% cost-sharing basis. (Arnie)
