Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The voting system is now open so the public can vote for the 2023 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Awards and select a Grand Prize Winner.
Last week, it was announced that an Irish nurse living in Dubai had been selected as a finalist, joining nine others from a field of more than 52,000 entries from 202 countries.
Cathy Cribben-Pearse is a nursing leader with over 20 years experience in the field. She has worked for the NHS London, Ireland and most recently as Director of Care Quality, Patient Safety and Accreditation at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, one of the leading hospitals in the United Arab Emirates. During the pandemic, Cathy is working pro bono as a certified coach online to nurses and midwives who need supportive advice during these challenging times. She identified a gap in need, and soon nurses from all over the world reached out to seize the opportunity.
As an international nursing leader, Cathy is passionate about providing the best possible care for her patients, with a sense of belonging, pride and connection to her purpose of serving. Her nursing career has been marked by a number of successful start-ups including the first high dependency unit in the NHS for pregnant women with other clinical conditions, the first private colposcopy clinic in Ireland, and one of the largest healthcare providers Part of the opening of one of the world’s startups are in Abu Dhabi. As Head of Care Quality, Patient Safety and Accreditation at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, she oversaw the successful accreditation of ‘Magnet’, the first hospital in the UAE to receive the world’s largest nursing accolade.

The top 10 finalists are:
- Irish Nurse in UAE, Cathy Cribben-Pearse: She subsequently resigned as director of nursing full-time to establish Mentoring Oaks, a global mentoring community that has attracted 200 nurses from around the world and midwives.
- KenyaChristine Mawia Sammy: She established the first neonatal unit in Kitui County in 2010, converted a separate nursery at the hospital into a self-contained neonatal unit, and helped bring the neonatal mortality rate from over 50% in 10 years Dropped sharply to below 10% a year.
- Panama, Gloria Ceballo: Gloria developed an educational program for bone marrow transplant nurses. Years later, the program has also been implemented at her hospital, Dr. Jose Renan Esquivel at Hospital Del Nino.
- Ireland, Jincy Jerry: To reduce the possibility of human error when collating lab results, she devised a suitable software solution. She received the Prix Hubert Tuor Academy Award for Innovation in 2021.
- Singapore, Lilian Yew Siew Mee: During the Covid-19 outbreak, Lilian mobilized some nursing leaders and nurses to help set up 14 vaccination centers to align with the National Vaccination Plan 2020-2021. She also deployed some nursing leaders to establish Covid-19 Treatment Facility (CTF).
- U.K., Margaret Helen Shepherd: She founded a national network of genetic diabetes nurses in 2002 to raise awareness of the condition (80% of cases are initially misdiagnosed, leading patients to receive unnecessary insulin injections). She is one of 70 National NIHR70@70 Senior Nurse Research Leaders (Driving Innovation and New Roles to Increase Research Awareness and Engagement in Clinical Care).
- the Philippines, Michael Joseph: His Telemedicine for the Elderly Program improved health literacy among older adults in 2012, and his Breastfeeding and Milk Banking (CRIB3) project improved infant care and recovery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his multimedia project on #VaccineEquity (with support from the International Council of Nurses) was deployed to various regions and countries.
- IndiaShanti Teresa Lakra: Having worked with the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India, Shanti is deeply committed to serving the people there and ensuring that adverse health conditions do not lead to their extinction .
- Portugal, Teresa Fraga: Noticing that children with chronic diseases had no support system, she decided to establish KASTELO – a palliative care unit for children with chronic diseases in Portugal. Her goal is to provide quality care through innovation, developing strategies to improve the quality of life of these children.
- Tanzania, Wilson Gwessa Fungameza: Wilson’s observation that many newborns were dying prompted him to conduct a simple research investigation into the causes of newborn deaths. Studies have shown that this is due to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), especially in premature babies due to immature lungs. Therefore, he invested in the hospital and introduced the Improvised Bubble CPAP Device, which reduced the neonatal mortality rate due to respiratory problems from 14.1% to 5.9%.

Cathy Cribben-Pearse will join nine other finalists and face a public voting process, followed by a final evaluation by a grand jury panel. The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, May 12 (International Nurses Day), and the winners will receive $250,000.
