Al-Qhoom tweeted on Tuesday that Omani-mediated consultations with the Saudi delegation were proceeding rapidly and that the government in Sanaa was optimistic about Oman’s progress and success in bringing peace to the eight-year conflict between the two sides.
He also appreciated the visit of the Saudi and Omani delegations to Sanaa and their participation in constructive talks to restore peace and good neighborliness in Yemen.
The Omani team is working to achieve a link between Sanaa and Riyadh, fulfilling the Yemenis’ desire for an end to the aggression and blockade, reparations and expulsion of foreign mercenaries.
On Saturday, Saudi and Omani delegations arrived in the Yemeni capital to begin talks with Ansarullah officials to reach a permanent ceasefire. They met Mahdi Mashat, head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, who reiterated Ansarullah’s pursuit of “a glorious peace” and the “freedom and independence” of Yemenis.
Saudi Arabia, with arms and logistical support from the United States and other Western nations, launched war on Yemen in March 2015 to crush Ansarullah and re-establish the Riyadh-friendly regime of Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
While the Saudi-led coalition has failed to achieve any of its goals, the war has killed hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Last October, a UN-brokered ceasefire in Yemen collapsed six months after it came into effect. Still, tensions have eased and casualties have been reduced as key elements of the ceasefire remain in place.
