DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – In line with the country’s aim to support seafarers and ensure their physical and mental health, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI UAE) has announced the launch of a campaign during UAE Maritime Week. Under the sponsorship of MOEI UAE, the week will be held from 15th to 19th May 2023. During the week, the Ministry will promote the various initiatives it has launched in support of the Blues, aiming to improve their quality of life and mental health.
Among the many initiatives launched by the Department to safeguard the interests of the maritime workforce, some of the most important include the ‘Support Our Blues’ initiative, which provides seafarers with free medical care, the ‘Salmeen’ initiative, which provides seafarers with mental health care and safety training, and the Safe Navigation initiative to raise awareness and provide training to prevent accidents at sea. In addition to these initiatives, it is worth noting that the UAE was one of the first countries to allow crew changes during the height of the pandemic, enabling the safe return of more than 240,000 seafarers, many of whom had been stranded at sea for months.

Mental health takes center stage
This week’s flagship event, Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East (SMLME) 2023, will include sessions dedicated to the physical and mental health of industry employees. The session ‘Addressing Mental Health and Wellbeing as Part of ESG Strategy’ will be held in support of the ‘Salmeen’ initiative launched by MOEI UAE to improve the psychological wellbeing of offshore workers and reduce human error that often leads to accidents. The goal is to create a positive environment that promotes safety and productivity in local, regional and global marine ecosystems.
The panel will include renowned mental health practitioners and industry experts such as Ben Bailey, Seafarer Mission Director, Yiannis Fafalios, Care4C CEO, Charles Watkins, Mental Health Support Solutions Founder, Dr Deepti Mankad, Professional Development Trainer, Wellness Coach & Counselor, Mindspeak, and Mariangela Zanaki, Organizational Development Consultant – Psychologist, Ceosun Consulting.
