Arlington (CBSNewsTexas) – After three decades, the Arlington Museum of Art is moving.

It will move from downtown to the Arlington Esports Arena and Expo Center at 1200 Ballpark Way under an agreement approved by the city council on April 11.
“Over the past several years, the Arlington Museum of Art has honed its skills as a never-ending museum,” said Arlington Museum of Art President and CEO Chris Hightower . “Every three to four months, we transform our entire space with brand new art exhibitions. Now we have the opportunity to expand.”
Museum agrees to pay $2.9 million to transform space for major immersive exhibits. The city will spend $1.9 million to improve the building’s exterior and a shared corridor.
In addition, a special use agreement will provide the Museum with 48,000 square feet of flexible space within the Expo Center. By comparison, its current home is 5,500 square feet; a converted store built in the 1950s.
“The new AMA footprint will be eight times larger than our current footprint,” Hightower said, “enabling us to blend traditional, immersive, interactive and an ever-evolving art form.”
In a news release, a museum spokesperson said the move is aimed at attracting more art lovers and more high-profile exhibits, including immersive ones. The larger, more flexible space will allow it to accommodate a wider variety of exhibits and educational offerings, officials said.
“The incredible momentum we’ve seen in the Arlington Entertainment District over the past five years is one of the main reasons why the Arlington Art Museum is such a good fit,” said Museum Board Chairman Jay Warren. “There is a great synergy here. The museum will be in a higher profile location to attract more visitors, which will allow us to bring a higher caliber of exhibits. At the same time, the museum’s programming will benefit visitors from Arlington. Provide another option to expand The District’s offerings.”
The museum’s relocation is scheduled to be completed in early 2024.
