Emirates News Agency – DCD Abu Dhabi urges public not to outsource iftar distribution to restaurants

ABU DHABI, 12th April, 2023 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, DCD, has called on the public not to outsource the preparation and distribution of iftar meals to restaurants and caterers. The DCD emphasized that any charitable donations and financial contributions must be made through licensed fundraising entities in Abu Dhabi.

Outsourcing and paying restaurants to prepare iftar meals is a violation of Federal Law No. (3) of 2021, which regulates fundraising and donations in the UAE. Individuals wishing to make a charitable donation may do so by making an in-kind or cash donation to a licensed fundraising entity or authorized donation box.

The DCD emphasizes the importance of establishing a culture of giving in accordance with legal frameworks and legislation. This helps regulate donations by protecting donated funds and ensuring they reach the correct beneficiaries.

However, the department believes that there is nothing illegal in the practice of preparing, buying and distributing iftar meals for nearby families, or distributing meals and dates to passers-by, or releasing water at mosques, as long as they are not collected. Money or donations of any kind used for illegal purposes.

Furthermore, the Department of Community Development reiterated that no act aimed at soliciting donations shall be established, organized or carried out in Abu Dhabi without the permission of the DCD, except for licensed fundraising entities which are charitable, federal, local and private institutions. Items solicited, accepted and donated as permitted by laws and regulations. In addition, they have a lot of experience and the ability to perform such tasks.

Any entity that collects or accepts donations without permission will be punished with imprisonment and a fine ranging from Dh150,000 to Dh300,000.
