A new bridge has been inaugurated on Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain Highway (E22), which connects the eastern and western sectors of the UAE capital Baniyas, according to the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT).

The project includes construction of the upper intersection connecting East Banias and West Banias, associated roads, conversion of the current East Banias roundabout into a signalized intersection, and construction of pedestrian ramps.

In addition, the project also involves the demolition of existing pedestrian tunnels, transport and protection of water supply and communication lines, irrigation lines and sewage lines, as well as street lighting and electricity distribution networks, the DMT said in its statement.

The new bridge will significantly improve the flow of traffic in and out of Baniyas and other nearby areas. It said the travel time between Baniyas East and Baniyas West has been reduced from 11 minutes to just 3 minutes, benefiting local residents.

It added that the interchange can accommodate about 1,400 vehicles per hour departing from E22 Abu Dhabi/Al Ain, and 1,100 vehicles per hour departing from East Baniyas or West Baniyas.

The bridge was inaugurated by DMT Chairman Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa. Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, Director General, DMT Operations; Saif Badr Al Qubaisi, Director General, Abu Dhabi Municipality;

Al Kaabi praised the project, saying the new bridge is an important milestone for the capital, demonstrating its commitment to modernity and progress.

It aims to improve traffic flow in and around Baniyas East and Baniyas West, while adhering to the highest traffic safety standards.

He noted that its innovative design and state-of-the-art features demonstrate Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable services and meeting societal expectations, boosting economic growth in the process.

According to Al Qubaisi, the bridge is an important part of the Abu Dhabi Municipality’s strategic plan to strengthen the infrastructure system and accommodate the expected growth in population and road users.

He said the new bridge underscores the municipality’s commitment to continuous improvement and development of key infrastructure components on Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland.

He added that the flyover has CCTV systems, traffic lights, pedestrian signs, fiber optic cables and connections to the Abu Dhabi Traffic Management Centre, as well as natural cosmetics, sanitation facilities and speed camera transmissions.
